Director of Public Works /City Engineer SUBJECT: TRAFFIC SIGNAL BATTERY BACKUP GRANT PROGRAM SUMMARY OF REQUEST: Staff requests City Council approve the following resolution for participation in the Traffic Signal Battery Backup Grant Program from the California Energy Commission. BACKGROUND: In the 2001/2002 fiscal year, the City replaced red traffic light bulbs at all traffic intersections with energy saving Light Emitting Diodes (LED) as part of an Edison rebate program. This fiscal year the City applied for the Traffic Signal Battery Backup System Grant, which is administered by the California Energy Commission. This grant program requires that the City adopt a resolution concurring with the state about uninterruptible power supply (UPS) conditions within the City. These UPS systems will allow the traffic intersections to run on a red flash mode, in the event of an Edison power failure, rather than staying dark. FISCAL IMPACT: The proposed total cost of the project is estimated at $63,700. The grant will fund 50% ($31,850) of the project and the remaining 50% will be required from the General Fund. Upon award of the grant, a budget amendment will be prepared and brought to the City Council for approval. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends City Council approve a resolution for participation in the Traffic Signal Battery Backup Grant Program from the California Energy Commission. • Agenda Item 0 ! - r • {r 0 , Prepared By: Reviewed By: ./ , V / 0,0,04, e• ge Bernard M K.
