DATE: July 11, 2011
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
THRU: Jill R. Ingram, City Manager
FROM: Sean P. Crumby, Acting Assistant City Manager /Public Works
SUBJECT: SEAL BEACH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REQUEST
FOR SIGNAGE IN EISENHOWER PARK
SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
That the City Council receive and file this report.
BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS:
During the 2011 budget hearings, representatives from the Seal Beach Chamber
of Commerce requested access to the police substation at the foot of the pier to
provide the public with tourist information and allow signage to indicate where
this information is available from the street. At that time staff was directed to
work with Chamber representatives to find an outcome that both meets the
needs of the Chamber while not impacting the facilities' current operation.
In discussion with Chamber representation, staff identified that affixing a
permanent sign to the substation would possibly create a conflict with the current
operation at the facility. In order to reach an acceptable compromise, staff
identified the opportunity to put a lockable freestanding bulletin board in front of
the park. The bulletin board can be used to promote upcoming Chamber events
along with directing visitors to the substation where the Chamber will have
access to flyer racks that already exist in the facility. All content placed on the
bulletin board must be managed by the Chamber and is limited to promoting
Chamber sponsored events only and not private business. The Chamber of
Commerce believes that this bulletin board will meet their needs and provide
flexibility above and beyond the originally requested signage.
The lockable bulletin board is a piece of equipment that the City already owns
and is stored at the City maintenance yard. The bulletin board is 4 feet by 2 feet
and stands 5 feet tall.
