DATE: August 8, 2011
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
THRU: Jill R. Ingram, City Manager
FROM: Sean P. Crumby, Assistant City Manager /Public Works
SUBJECT: DONATE LEGACY ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING
STATION
SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
That the City Council authorize staff donate one existing electric vehicle charging
station to a non profit organization, Electric Auto Association.
BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS:
In 1996 the City of Seal Beach installed three electric vehicle charging stations.
These charging stations were acquired through State Grants, with one unit
installed at the Police Department Parking Lot and two in the 8 th Street Parking
Lot.
The units were in use until their removal in 2006. The two stations at the beach
parking lot had rusted, deteriorated and outlived their useful life. Also, usage had
decreased for that generation of electrical charging stations. The City removed
the two stations in the beach lot and disposed of them. The third unit has been
unused in the Police Department parking lot until several weeks ago. This unit
has not been accessible to the public, as a security fence was constructed
around the facility. The unit is in need of maintenance.
Prior to the recent ceremony unveiling the newly installed charging stations, a
non - profit organization called Electric Auto Association (EAA), solicited the City
asking the City to donate the legacy charger to EAA. (See attached letter.) The
charger is no longer in use with the City. EAA plans on reusing the parts and
rebuilding it to use for older electric vehicles with older paddle connections. See
attached letter. Current vehicles no longer use this paddle type connection, but
now use type J1772.
The City has no longer a current or future use for these chargers. There is no
value to the City, and staff recommends donating the chargers.
