THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Seal Beach City Council encourages all City residents when shopping this holiday season and throughout the year to first think cqU 1 3_' LO CAA JJ e IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I hereby affix my signature and the seal of the City of Seal Beach this fourteenth day of November in the Year Two Thousand Eleven. e ,7 - /_) n 4 r 10th Anniversary Seal Beach Police Department Chaplain Program WHEREAS, The Seal Beach Police Department Chaplain Program was established by Senior Chaplain Don Shoemaker in October 2001; and WHEREAS, October 2011 marks the 10th Anniversary of the Chaplain Program with more than twenty -five hundred hours of voluntary hours, and WHEREAS, Senior Chaplain Don Shoemaker and Chaplain George Vogel serve in times of crisis for the needs of police department personnel, serves as an important link between the police department and the community, and assist the police department in a wide variety of tasks; and WHEREAS, The Chaplains are well qualified through ministerial training, ordination, long records of public and military service, and specialized chaplain training. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, the City Of Seal Beach City Council does hereby recognize October 2011 as the 10th Anniversary of the SEAL BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT CHAPLAIN PROGRAM and on behalf of the residents of the City of Seal Beach, extends our sincere thank you and gratitude to Chaplain Don Shoemaker and Chaplain George Vogel for their dedication and commitment to the police department and community. Sloan "Entrepreneurship Week" November 14 -20, 2011 WHEREAS Most of the new jobs created through the United States in the past decade have come from the creative efforts of entrepreneurs, innovators, and small businesses engaged in endeavors ranging from micro - businesses to large -scale ventures; and WHEREAS according to the Department of Labor, most of the new jobs created throughout the United States in the past decade have come from the creative efforts of entrepreneurs, which have been expanding and advancing technology and fueling the recent growth in the economy; and WHEREAS entrepreneurs are engaged citizens who work to improve their local communities, providing better opportunities for businesses to operate and a better overall environment for the human resources they need to advance their innovative ideas; and WHEREAS more than 70% of young people envision starting a business or doing something entrepreneurial as adults, and entrepreneurial awareness will assist them in the future regardless of whether they run their own business or work in a business owned by others; and WHEREAS the high interest of young people in becoming entrepreneurs and the critical role entrepreneurs have played in advancing the national economy make it vital to encourage young people from all academic backgrounds and all walks of life to explore their entrepreneurial potential and see if they have it in them to `make a job'. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, the City of Seal Beach City Council does hereby recognize November 14 -20, 2011 as: Entrepreneurship Week and call upon all citizens, companies, and organizations to join in celebrating the great entrepreneurial spirit by encouraging our youth to begin a journey to explore their big ideas — and take it on! Sloan r t "Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month" November 2011 WHEREAS pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers and is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States; and WHEREAS when symptoms of pancreatic cancer present themselves, it is usually too late for an optimistic prognosis, and 74% of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first year of their diagnosis while 94% of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first five years; and WHEREAS approximately 4010 deaths will occur in California in 2011; and WHEREAS there is no cure for pancreatic cancer and there have been no significant improvements in survival rates in the last 40 years; and WHEREAS the Federal Government invests significantly less money in pancreatic cancer research than it does in any of the other leading cancer killers; and pancreatic cancer research constitutes only approximately 2% of the National Cancer Institute's federal research funding, a figure far too low given the severity of the disease, its mortality rate, and how little is known about how to arrest it; and WHEREAS the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is the first and only national patient advocacy organization that serves the pancreatic cancer community nationwide by focusing its efforts on public policy, research funding, patient services, and public awareness and education related to developing effective treatments and a cure for pancreatic cancer; and WHEREAS the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and its affiliates support those patients currently battling pancreatic cancer, as well as to those who have lost their lives to the disease, and are committed to nothing less than a cure. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, the City of Seal Beach City Council does hereby recognize November 2011 as: Pancreatic cancer Awareness Month And encourage all residents to become better aware of the research into early detection, causes, and effective treatments.
