HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC AG Agenda 2012-05-14 - Proclamations Recognition _ . .______ ___ _ . _ ___..__. _ _ _ ______ _ ROCLAMATION I Peace Officers' Memorial Week May 13-19, 2012 WHEREAS, there are thousands of law enforcement officers serving in . communities across the United States, including 31 sworn members of the Seal Beach Police Department; and WHEREAS, since the first recorded death in 1792, over 18,000 law enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty, including one member of the Seal Beach Police Department; and WHEREAS, the names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, which was dedicated in 1991 in Washington, D.C.; and , WHEREAS, Peace Officers' Memorial Week was designed to honor the dedicated men and women of law enforcement who lost their lives in the line of duty; and WHEREAS, former President John F. Kennedy designated May 15th as Peace Officers' Memorial Day and by a joint resolution approved October 1, 1962, as amended (76 Stat. 676), and by Public Law 103-322, as amended (36 U.S.C. 136-137), the President has been authorized and requested to designate May 15th of each year as "Peace Officers Memorial Day" and the week in which it falls as "Police Week"; and WHEREAS, all Americans are encouraged to reflect on the ways in which our lives have been touched by the peace officers who stand guard over our neighborhoods; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Seal Beach City Council formally declares May 13-19, 2012, "PEACE OFFICERS' M ir 1\' OMAL, WEEK" and publicly salutes the service of law enforcement officers in the City of Seal Beach and in communities across our nation.
