SEAL BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT
* CORPORAL MARIA MA'':
4- WHEREAS: On October 12, 2011, a heinous mass murder occurred in the city of Seal 4,
fr Beach. Nine victims were senselessly shot by a gunman, with eight persons tragically dying, *
* leaving dozens of family members suffering the loss of their husbands, wives,parents, and
* children. The Seal Beach Police Department was challenged with providing support, resources, it
* and consistent communication with the large contingent of grieving family members. Corporal :
4- Mariana Martinez was assigned to represent the Seal Beach Police Department as the liaison *
between the families and the department;
* *
: WHEREAS: Corporal Martinet rose to the occasion and tirelessly assisted family members :
* through many of the most difficult of situations imaginable. She empathetically assisted family
* members with logistical support for memorial services and burial:. She collaborated with other :
* law enforcement agencies, mortuaries, and clergy members to ensure respectful and honorable *
* services for the victims. As the prosecution of this matter has unfolded, Corporal Martinez has 4
* served as a single point of contact with the family members, easing levels of uncertainty, 4-
* misinformation, and rumors that can lead to greater levels of distress for family members. tr

* WHEREAS: Corporal Mariana Martinez was recently selected as award winner for the
* California Peace Officers Association Award of Distinction and recognized by Crime *
* Survivors, a victims advocacy group,

* VOLUNTEERS IN POLICE SERVICES 4-

* WHEREAS, members of the Seal Beach Police Department Volunteers in 4-
4- Police Services (VIPS) have been providing service to the Seal Beach community
* since 1995, enriching the service level of the police department and enhancing the
4- levels of safety and quality of life of Seal Beach community members;
* 4-
WHEREAS: George Segerstrom has been a dedicated member of the Seal
* Beach Police Department's Volunteer in Police Services for nearly 15 years, fr
currently one of the longest tenured members of the program, volunteering his
* services to the community in areas such as staffing the Community Safety
Building, managing the fleet maintenance operation for the police department,
it patrols throughout residential and commercial districts,providing support to police 4-
personnel, and dozens of other significant functions,
* *
4- WHEREAS: George Segerstrom has given 13,000 hours of his time to the
* Seal Beach community as a member of the Volunteer in Police Services Program, 4-
* *
4- WHEREAS: We are honoring George Segerstrom for his dedicated service to
our community,
