HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Presentations 2013-05-29 rocfamation Xatlonaf Beach Safety Week June 3 - 9, 2013 WHEREAS, the beautiful coastal and inland beaches of Southern California represent a world renowned recreational resource; and WHEREAS, Seal Beach residents and visitors alike are drawn to these beaches by the millions each year for water and beach activities; and WHEREAS, the aquatic environment has dangers that can be effectively managed through public awareness and the vigilance of professional lifeguards; and WHEREAS, an annual reminder of the joys and hazards associated with the aquatic environment are appropriate at the commencement of the busy summer beach season; and 0- WHEREAS, Seal Beach residents and visitors alike must 0- remember to Never Swim Alone, Always Swim Near a Lifeguard, Never Drink Alcohol Before Swimming, Respect the Power of the Surf, and Learn to Swim. NOW THEREFORE, LET IT BE PROCLAIMED that the City of Seal Beach does hereby recognize June 3-9, 2013 as: "National Beach Safety Week" and urge all residents to enjoy themselves at the beach this 2e- year, while taking appropriate measures to protect themselves and their children. 21- IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I hereby affix my signature and the seal of the City of Seal Beach this twenty-ninth day of May in the Year Two Thousand Thirteen. Sloan r-r-r-r-r 7777or T' Ttl 77 tT' t Procfamation Orange County Fire Authority 2013 DR 0 WAffNG PREVENTION S UMMER WHEREAS, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in Orange County for children under the age of five and is a county-wide crisis requiring everyone's help; and WHEREAS, fatal and non-fatal drowning is a silent event occurring in as little as two inches of water, including swimming pools, spas, lakes, the ocean and any body of water; and WHEREAS, the theme of this year's drowning prevention campaign "The ABC's of Water Safety" provides in depth information on what residents can do to prevent child drownings; and WHEREAS, the initiatives set forth in Children's Hospital of Orange County's "3 Tragic Seconds" Program should increase public awareness regarding proper procedures to prevent this needless tragedy; and WHEREAS, the period of May 27th (Memorial Day) through September 2nd (Labor Day) when the highest percentage of drownings take place has been designated as "Drowning Prevention Summer;" and NOW, THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED that the City of Seal Beach City Council recognize Memorial Day through Labor Day 2013 as: "Drowning Prevention Summer" and encouraging all residents and businesses to become partners in preparedness by increasing their knowledge of proper safety measures to follow in preventing unnecessary drownings.
