HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Presentations Y-ROICLAMATION Peace Officers' Memorial Week May 12-16, 2014 WHEREAS, there are approximately 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Seal Beach Police Department; and WHEREAS, nearly 60,000 assaults against law enforcement officers are reported each year, resulting in approximately 16,000 injuries; and WHEREAS, since the first recorded death in 1791, almost 20,000 law enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty, including one member of the Seal Beach Police Department; and WHEREAS, the names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.; WHEREAS, Peace Officers' Memorial Week was designed to honor the dedicated men and women of law enforcement who lost their lives in the line of duty; and WHEREAS, former President John F. Kennedy designated May 15th as Peace Officers'Memorial Day and by a joint resolution approved October 1, 1962, as amended (76 Stat. 676), and by Public Law 103-322, as amended (36 U.S.C, 136-137), the President has been authorized and requested to designate May 15th of each year as "Peace Officers Memorial Day" and the week in which it falls as "Police Week"; and WHEREAS, May 15th is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of all fallen officers and their families and U.S. flags should be flown at half-staff; THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Seal Beach City Council formally designated May 12-16, 2014 as-, "PEACE 0MCERS' MEMORIAL SEEKS IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I hereby affix my signature and the seal of the City of Seal Beach this Twelfth day of May in the Year Two Thousand Fourteen. 7—EE-11e ry/A.b eaton, Mayor Mayor Pro Tem: David W. Shanks Procfamation "NationarPuffic Works Weed" Way 18 — 24, 2014 WHEREAS, the 2014 theme is "Building for Today, Planning for Tomorrow"; and WHEREAS, public works services provide in our community are an integral part of our citizens' everyday lives; and WHEREAS, the support of an understanding and informed citizenry is vital to the efficient operation of public works system and programs such as water, sewers, streets, and highways, public building, and solid waste collections; and WHEREAS, the health, safety and comfort of this community greatly depends on these facilities and services; and WHEREAS, the quality and effectiveness of these facilities, as well as their planning, design, and construction, are vitally dependent upon the efforts and skill of public works officials. HEART CITY"" WHEREAS, all veterans have made sacrifices for their countrymen and many veterans have suffered injury or death to secure the freedom of our nation for future generations; and WHEREAS, in 1782, the Purple Heart was first established by George Washington, then General and Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, as the Badge of Military Merit to be awarded to any soldier, regardless of rank, who performed a singularly meritorious action; and WHEREAS, in 1932, upon the 200th Anniversary of George Washington's birth, the Purple Heart was revived as a medal recognizing American soldiers wounded or killed in the line of duty and was emblazoned with George Washington's profile and coat of arms; and WHEREAS, on April 12, 2012, the State of California became the first state to designate itself a "Purple Heart State," in recognition of the sacrifices of Californian veterans, especially those who were wounded or killed in the line of duty; and WHEREAS, in 2013, the Orange County Board of Supervisors declared the County of Orange to be a"Purple Heart County". NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT that the Seal Beach City Council does hereby proclaim the City of Seal Beach is designated as a "PURPLE HEART CITY" by the Military Order of the Purple Heart - Chapter 752.
