priceof-lidil\e'oV;;-lership and rental units throughout the cuunty; and
WHEREAS,
WHEREAS, the need for affordable housing options is not limited to beginning families and
lower wage earning individuals but to our disabled residents and senior citizens,
and,
WHEREAS, affordable housing is simply a home in whidl a lower income family, disabled
person, or senior citizen can afford without spending mure tlllln 30% - 40% of
their incume; and
WHEREAS, unen tor lower income families, disabled persons, or senior citizens the ability to
alTord a home wuuld be impossible without rental assistance; and
Wl-ffiREAS, the Orange County Housing Authority operates the Section R Rental Assistance
Program that currently assists over 7,400 families and partner with over 3,500
propel1y managers and landlords to provide aIlordable housing opportunities
through the private real estate market; and,
WHEREAS, the Orange County Housing AuthOlity, to meet the demand for providing rental
assistance, operates a Section 8 Waiting List in order to ful1ill the safe and decent
housing needs fi)r over 18,000 people in Orange County, and
. wrffiREAS, the opening of the Section 8 Waiting List provides a rarc opponunily for lowcr
income families, disabled persons, and senior citizens to gain the acccss to
affordable housing opportunities, and
WHEREAS, the Section 8 Waiting list was last opened in 1999 and 1995 and will open once
again for the entire month of June 200 I;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAfMED, that the City of Seal Beach declare the entire
month of June 2001 as Rental Assistance Awareness Month so that all interested families,
disabled persons, and seniors may become aware of the opportunity to gain access to the Orange
County Housing Authority Section 8 Waiting List; and,
BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED, that interested residents can call (714) 480-2740 or log onlo
w_ww,Qchousing,Q[1!, fur thrther information regarding the Section 8 Waiting List; and,
BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED, that the City of Seal Beach urges all of its residents to make
effOlts to better understand affordable housing issues and to remember that all American dreams
bcgin with opportunity
