IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
History Workgroup Chair Michael Dobkins moved, Marketing Workgroup Co-Chair Deb
Machen seconded, and the motion carried unanimously, that the Committee approve the
Meeting Minutes of August 21, 2014.
V. ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION
A. Group discussion
Chair Dobkins reported that he has connected with the CSPAN channels regarding
coverage of the Centennial events for the channel's "Local Cities Tour" and the effort is
one step closer to fruition.
Merchandise Workgroup Co-Chair Nancey Kredell reported that the Merchandise
Workgroup has purchased Centennial clings and stickers, which have arrived and are
for sale. These items were purchased using Founders' Day funds, so money from the
sale of these items will return to the Founders' Day funds. It was suggested that the
Merchandise Workgroup Co-Chairs meet with the City's Director of Finance to clarify
various accounting needs.
Co-Chair Kredell introduced the Taste of Seal Beach program, which will be a contest
amongst local restaurants to offer the best brunch deals, with the 20 best deals being
offered on the program card. Individuals may purchase the card for an amount to be
determined and are able to redeem each of the deals offered on the card. The
Merchandise Workgroup will start soliciting for this program after January 1, 2015 and
plans to have it ready to go by May. All Seal Beach restaurants will be approached to
participate in the contest to offer the best brunch deal. Fundraising Workgroup Chair
Scott Weir indicated that this is not a Fundraising Workgroup effort.
Co-Chair Kredell also showed a sample commemorative bag, t-shirts, and hats. Co-
Chair Machen inquired as to why the Centennial logo was not on some of the hat
samples. The Merchandise Co-Chairs indicated that the hats would be offered in two
different styles. Chair Weir moved, Co-Chair Kredell seconded, and the motion carried
unanimously that the Merchandise Workgroup be allowed to produce and sell one style
of hat that does not include the Centennial logo.
Chair Dobkins made the suggestion to check the local stores that sell Seal Beach
merchandise to determine price points for Centennial merchandise.
Co-Chair Machen indicated that progress is being made with website development, that
she would like to meet with History Workgroup Chair Dobkins to coordinate efforts, and
that she would appreciate input to her email regarding desired website elements from
each Chair by September 18t .
Chair Weir provided a wish list of location sites for the brick fundraising project to
Assistant City Manager Patrick Gallegos. Assistant City Manager Gallegos will review
the list with Public Works and the City Council.
The Committee reviewed the Sponsorship Opportunities packet prepared for use by the
Fundraising Workgroup and staff provided feedback on items in the packet (attached).
Celebrations Workgroup Chair Marc Loopesko inquired as to how the Founders' Day
contribution of over $35,000 was being considered in the sponsorship framework.
Chair Loopesko offered the idea of a different level of sponsorship for this donation
amount.
Chairs Loopesko and Machen will meet with Public Works staff regarding reserving
dates for banners to be displayed in the city.
Assistant City Manager Gallegos reported that staff is researching various point of sale
options in order to make online sales work within the City's finance structure. Assistant
City Manager Gallegos also advised the group that the Centennial Executive
Committee would be meeting on September 24th at 2:30 p.m. and asked that any
purchasing requests for consideration by the Committee be presented to staff before
then.
