COUNCIL ITEMS
ITEM "A" / COYOTE STRATEGIC TRAPPING UPDATE
Mayor Deaton highlighted the strategies the City has worked on since the last
Council meeting: partnered with other agencies and property owners; ramped up
the education efforts; and continued to work closely with the Long Beach Animal
Care Services. The Mayor stated that trapping is not the only solution and the
City will use a multifaceted approach to the issue. The City.Manager added that
the Coyote Sub-committee will be meeting on October 17th to continue to develop
a comprehensive management plan for both short and long term and reported
that there were 3 coyotes trapped in just one week and will continue the trapping
for three more weeks. Councilman Levitt expressed his concerns about the use
of carbon-dioxide gas to euthanize the trapped coyotes and suggested the City
lobby the State legislators to change the laws. Dave San Filippo, Critter Busters,
clarified the process and method used in trapping the coyotes — regulated by
state law.
