SEAL BEACH 2015 CENTENNIAL COMMITTEE WORKGROUP CHAIR COMMITTEE
HELD JULY 30, 2014
I. CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Seal Beach 2015 Centennial Committee Workgroup Chair
Committee was called to order at 3:35 p.m. by Assistant City Manager Patrick Gallegos in
the City Council Chambers, 211 8t" Street, Seal Beach.
II. ROLL CALL

III. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Seal Beach resident Carla Watson indicated that she felt that the Executive Committee
meeting was unproductive (the Executive Committee meeting immediately preceded this
meeting).
IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Marketing Workgroup Co-Chair Seth Eaker moved, Fundraising Workgroup Chair Scott
Weir seconded, and the motion carried unanimously, that the Committee approve the
Meeting Minutes of June 26, 2014.
V. ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION
A. Centennial logo
The logo selected through the logo contest process was provided to the Committee
(attached). The winner, Christy Smith, is a local resident, graphic designer, and part of
the production team of the local newspaper. Marketing Co-Chair Eaker indicated that a
press release would be forthcoming. History Workgroup Chair Michael Dobkins
requested that he be copied on press releases when they are distributed.
B. Review events & projects approved by Centennial Executive Committee
Assistant City Manager Patrick Gallegos reported that the Executive Committee
unanimously approved the events/activities presented by each Workgroup (attached).
Expenses related to each event/activity will need to go through the purchasing process
as outlined below in Item C.
Exact locations of the brick locations (part of the Fundraising Workgroup project plan)
will need to be identified and approved by the City.
Celebrations Workgroup Chair Marc Loopesko commented that a streamlined process
of obtaining approval for expenditures is desirable. The Committee discussed the
ability to single-source items, as appropriate. The Committee also discussed that some
of the items requested for the various events/activities will be shared resources.
Marketing Workgroup Co-Chairs Eaker and Machen indicated that a brochure for
Fundraising Workgroup efforts will be produced by the end of the week of August 8t"
The Committee brainstormed the idea of having a birthday celebration at City Hall on
the actually Centennial date, October 27t". Ideas generated included holding a cake
baking contest.
The Committee discussed the idea of producing a souvenir program and exchanged
ideas about how to coordinate with City staff, soliciting sponsorship ads (Fundraising
Workgroup), developing content (Marketing Workgroup), and approving the finished
document. The Committee discussed possibly outsourcing the production of this
program to a contractor. Discussion of this item will continue in the future.
The Committee determined dates (some dates tentative or To Be Determined) for the
events proposed by the Celebrations Workgroup as follows:
Main Street Carnival & Evening Fireworks: 10/24/15
Dinner Dance: 10/17/15
McGaugh Pool Party: on/about 8/15/15
Golf Tournament: 5/4/15
Tennis Tournament: on/about 9/20/15
Movies in the Parks: on/about 6/4/15, 6/18/15 & 7/16/15
Three occurrences, each at a different location
Beach Party: on/about 8/9/15
City Hall, Police Dept. & Fire Station Open Houses: TBD
History Workgroup Chair Dobkins indicated he will coordinate with the Celebrations
Workgroup to schedule history related presentations on the calendar.
Merchandise Workgroup Chair Nancey Kredell indicated that the Merchandise
Workgroup will produce reusable bags, which will be imprinted with the Centennial logo.
Marketing Workgroup Co-Chair Eaker inquired as to the plan for producing t-shirts and
indicated he understood that the Merchandise Workgroup was not planning on
including the Centennial logo on t-shirts. Marketing Workgroup Co-Chair Eaker
expressed his strong commitment to the Centennial logo being included on all materials
produced. History Workgroup Chair Dobkins moved, Merchandise Workgroup Chair
Kredell seconded, and the motion passed that the Centennial logo appear on all
Centennial material with the exception of top-wear, soft goods apparel, which may
include a second logo in addition to the Centennial logo.

C. Budget
Assistant City Manager Gallegos reviewed the purchasing policy with the Committee:.
Expenses less than $1,000 do not require quotes
Expenses between $1,000 - $5,000 require two quotes (minimum); and
Expenses greater than $5,000 require three formal quotes.
Assistant City Manager Gallegos also reported to the group that the Executive
Committee unanimously approved the City Manager (or in her absence the Assistant
City Manager) approving purchases below $5,000 (two quotes required for expenses
between $1,000 - $5,000) and that only purchases above $5,000 would require majority
vote of the Executive Committee. City Manager Jill Ingram will rely on Assistant City
Manager Gallegos to work with the Workgroup Chairs and the public to have input on
events/activities and the information gathered will be provided to her when approving
expenditures.
D. Chair updates & comments
Chair comments were provided as part of the events & projects review earlier in the
meeting.
E. Determine next meeting date & time
The Committee scheduled the next meeting for Thursday, August 21, 2014 at 3:30 p.m.
in the City Council Chambers.
VI. ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 p.m.

Se 1 Beach Centennial Historical Projects Master Plan
Preliminary Draft
Our goals are to present 2015's Seal Beach with a full range of historical projects and
events that covers the full range of the city's rich past and to also document our
centennial year for future Seal Beach residents and historians.
1. Seal Beach Film Festival with the Bay Theater as a possible location
2. Oral History Project
3. Historical Walking Tours
a. Live Tours with docents (possibly in historical costume)and historical
pictures displayed at stops.
b. Self-guided tours, either with brochure or recording
4. Historical Plaques throughout the city
5. History Programming—all-day event or monthly. Panels and Presentations
could include:
a. Local Indians
b. Spanish Land Grants and 19`h Century History before Anaheim Landing
c. Anaheim Landing Days (with Anaheim Historical Society?)
d. Apollo&Aerospace
e. Naval Weapons Station
f. Historical Slideshow
g. Pacific Electric Railway History
h. Local historian panels(Stan Poe, Chris Epting,Larry Strawther,Claudine
Burnett,etc.)
6. School Outreach

Non-Historical Events
Here's some potential non-historical happenings for the centennial
17. Local Composer Alex Kaloian has composed a Centennial March for 2 Pianos
and would like to give a performance
18. Break the Guinness World's Record for longest model railroad along the old Red
Car route on Electric Avenue.
19. Musical Flashmob video shot on pier and Ocean Avenue (Possible Songs: Under
The Boardwalk,Birthday from The Beatles White Album)
