HomeMy WebLinkAboutRPC Min 2014-11-17 MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE SEAL BEACH RECREATION & PARKS COMMISSION HELD NOVEMBER 17, 2014 I. CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Seal Beach Recreation & Parks Commission was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Chair Sustarsic in the City Council Chambers, 211 8th Street, Seal Beach. II. ROLL CALL Present: Chair Sustarsic Commissioners Bennett, Powell, and Sosenko Excused Absent: Commissioner Watson Also present: Tim Kelsey, Recreation Manager III. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Commissioner Powell moved, Commissioner Bennett seconded, and the motion carried unanimously, that the Commission approve the agenda as submitted. IV. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS Seal Beach residents spoke to thank the commission and staff for the installation of the volleyball courts on the beach. Staff reported that the courts were installed using a 14 foot post and that nets would be installed the following day. V. CONSENT CALENDAR Commissioner Sosenko moved, Commissioner Bennett seconded, and the motion carried unanimously, that the Commission approve the Consent Calendar. 1. Meeting Minutes of September 22, 2014. VI. SCHEDULED MATTERS 2. Memorial Bench Placement Program and Expand the Forest Tim Kelsey introduced Luis Estevez, Deputy Director of Public Works who presented the item. Mr. Estevez presented the proposed program to the commission. In his presentation he detailed the authorized placement of both benches and trees within the City's park system. Commissioner Powell inquired if the program would include a plaque. Mr. Estevez reported that a plaque would be included at a cost to applicant for a bench but not for a memorial tree. Commissioner Sosenko inquired about the number of request that the City has received for the program. Mr. Estevez reported that the tree program is new and has been advertised yet and that there are about 10 people waiting to take part in the bench program. Recreation Manager Tim Kelsey reported that the tree program will also help to accomplish the goals of the Parks Master Plan to diversify the age of the urban forest. The commission received and filed the report with no reportable action. VII. STAFF CONCERNS Chair Sustarsic opened Staff Concerns. Tim Kelsey reported that the City's annual holiday events would be taking place beginning with the tree lighting ceremony on November 29th, the Christmas Parade on December 5th and Breakfast with Santa on December 13th VIII. COMMISSION CONCERNS Chair Sustarsic opened Commission Concerns. Commissioner Bennett commented that she was excited for volleyball courts be installed on the beach. IX. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 6:38 p.m. The Commission adjourned to a meeting to be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. The City of Seal Beach complies with Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
