National Tsunami Preparedness Week
March 22 - 28, 2015
WHEREAS, the City of Seal Beach is a coastal city of the Pacific Ocean;
and
WHEREAS, tsunami is a term of Japanese origin describing the high
ocean waves that sometimes result from offshore seismic events; and
WHEREAS, over the past two hundred years the coast of California has
experienced at least two dozen tsunamis, fifteen of which have damaged
our coastal communities; and
WHEREAS, the City of Seal Beach is a Tsunami Ready Community. This
is a national certification issued by the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service
(NWS); and
WHERAS, to be designated a Tsunami Ready Community there are a
variety of criteria that must be met, including: establish a 24-hour
warning point and emergency operations center, have more than one way
to receive tsunami warnings and alert the public, promote public
readiness through the community education, and develop a formal
tsunami plan; and
WHEREAS, the City of Seal Beach in cooperation with the State of
California, Office of Emergency Services (Cal-OES) will be taking an
active role in promoting public education and awareness about tsunami
preparedness.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Seal Beach City Council
formally declares March 22 - 28, 2015,
"NATIONAL TSUNAMI PREP RE DN ESS WEEEK"
and publicly acknowledges the importance of preparing for natural
disasters in the City of Seal Beach.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I hereby affix my signature and the seal of the
City of Seal Beach this twenty-third day of March in the Year Two
Thousand Fifteen.
