HomeMy WebLinkAbout~Proclamation - Peace Officers Memorial Week Z�OCLAMJATION Peace Officers' Memorial Week May 11 — 15, 2015 WHEREAS, there are approximately 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Seal Beach Police Department; and WHEREAS, nearly 60,000 assaults against law enforcement officers are reported each year, resulting in approximately 16,000 injuries; and WHEREAS, since the first recorded death in 1791, almost 20,000 law enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty, including one member of the Seal Beach Police Department; and WHEREAS, the names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and WHEREAS, Peace Officers' Memorial Week was designed to honor the dedicated men and women of law enforcement who lost their lives in the line of duty; and WHEREAS, former President John F. Kennedy designated May 15th as Peace Officers' Memorial Day and by a joint resolution approved October 1, 1962, as amended (76 Stat. 676), and by Public Law 103-322, as amended (36 U.S.C. 136-137), the President has been authorized and requested to designate May 15th of each year as "Peace Officers Memorial Day" and the week in which it falls as "Police Week"; and WHEREAS, May 15th is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of all fallen officers and their families and U.S. flags should be flown at half-staff. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, that the Seal Beach City Council formally designates May 11-15, 2015 as: IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I hereby affix my signature and the seal of the City of Seal Beach this Eleventh Day of May in the Year Two Thousand Fifteen.
