SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
That the City Council approve the purchase of a new storage area network (SAN)
to support critical IT infrastructure.
BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS:
A storage area network (SAN) is a device that enables the City infrastructure to
connect servers together to support virtualization, high availability, and shared
resources. The current SAN is out of warranty as of June 30, 2015. It is
necessary to replace this end of life equipment.
Three products were evaluated based on capacity, speed of data retrieval,
stability, serviceability, and costs. The three devices that were evaluated were
Dell Compellent, EMC, and Nimble. Quotes for three different devices were
received by five different vendors.
Based upon the evaluated criteria mentioned above and the cost, staff
recommends selecting Virtual Graffiti's Nimble device.
