HomeMy WebLinkAboutCentennial Committee Minutes 06-18-15 MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE
SEAL BEACH 2015 CENTENNIAL COMMITTEE WORKGROUP CHAIR COMMITTEE
HELD JUNE 18, 2015
I. CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Seal Beach 2015 Centennial Committee Workgroup Chair
Committee was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Assistant City Manager Patrick Gallegos in
the City Council Chambers, 211 8t" Street, Seal Beach.
II. ROLL CALL
Present: Marc Loopesko, Celebrations Workgroup
Deb Machen, Marketing Workgroup
Seth Eaker, Marketing Workgroup
Michael Dobkins, History Workgroup
Nancey Kredell, Merchandise Workgroup
Laura Ellsworth, Fundraising Workgroup
Carla Watson, Merchandise Workgroup
Also present: Patrick Gallegos, Assistant City Manager
Tina Knapp, Acting City Clerk
III. PUBLIC COMMENTS
Public Comments was opened. Barbara Wright thanked Deb Machen for bringing the
Centennial banner to the Women's Club Tea. Ellen Brannigan spoke about the desire for
more Centennial activities in Leisure World. There being no other speakers, Public
Comments was closed.
IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF 5/28/15
Eaker moved, Watson seconded, and the motion carried, that the Committee approve the
meeting minutes of May 28, 2015.
V. ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION
A. Staff comments
Gallegos commented that staff recently met with various Leisure World representatives
to clarify the appropriate representatives with whom to work regarding Centennial
activities (including bricks) in Leisure World. Gallegos also reported that we anticipate
a large donation from Republic Services (City's waste hauler), details are being
determined. In regards to bricks, it was determined that certain non-letter characters
will be allowed on brick inscriptions and the opportunity to include these characters is
being extended to all buyers (deadline to change bricks already purchased is 6/22/15).
Staff will be reviewing all brick inscriptions. On behalf of the City, Gallegos thanked
everyone for all of the successful Centennial events so far and we look forward to more
throughout the rest of the year.
B. Workgroup Chair reports
Dobkins provided the attached outline of history events. Dobkins indicated that the
walking tours are being coordinated by Larry Strawther. The Committee had a
discussion about the intent of use of the bathing suit beauties re-creation project and it
was determined that the picture may be sold, in addition to being in the commemorative
book. Staff will work on a release form for use of pictures appropriate for these needs.
Dobkins is looking for recommendations for a photographer for the bathing suit beauties
re-creation project. Judges are being determined and Dobkins would like to offer gift
certificates as prizes to the participants. Dobkins reached out to the librarian that
coordinated the Orange County photo drive for guidance on the planned photo drives.
Dobkins indicated he would like a laptop and scanner purchased for use during the
photo drive and wanted to explore the idea of these being purchased after the event by
an outside party. The Marketing Workgroup Chairs indicated they will work to
accommodate and advertise the history slide show event scheduled for 9/2/15 and
history day scheduled for 9/19/15. In discussion regarding history day scheduled for
September 19th, it was determined that participation by the Panama Pacific Expo
Historian would not be sought. Dobkins reported that oral histories have resumed,
which are being conducted by Libby Appelgate.
Ellsworth provided an update on brick sales and indicated they are looking for a date for
ribbon cutting for each brick site. Ellsworth read a letter from the Seal Beach Lions
Club that expressed appreciation for their participation in Centennial events thus far
and indicated they would be happy to provide food at the beach party for 200 and fire
open house for 200 should the Committee decide this is appropriate. Loopesko
reported that food is not planned as part of the fire open house at this point, but that he
would keep the Committee and Lions Club informed of planning for the event.
The Merchandise Workgroup Chairs reported that the order for hooded sweatshirts
arrived and that Send It Packintq is selling the Centennial note cards. Taste of Seal
Beach sales will begin on July 1S and all proceeds will go to the Centennial fund.
The Marketing Workgroup Chairs reported that web content/development continues
and that flyers and posters are being created for upcoming events. Promotion on
Facebook continues and it seems that the marketing strategies are working as the
events are being well-attended. It was reported that a publisher has been identified to
produce the Centennial commemorative book and that details are being determined.
The Committee was enthusiastic about the publisher and distribution options that have
been identified. Editorial content continues to flow for the newspaper and Kredell and
Eaker's appearance on SBTV-3 was well-received, with positive feedback. It was
reported that $2,000 of the "Sun" sponsorship has been used to-date and that history
events will start adding to this.
Loopesko provided the attached presentation and reported that Stan Berry will be at the
fire open house to display the historical fire display (much like the police display at the
police open house). The Committee agreed to offering a deal for purchasing a table at
the Centennial Dinner Dance. It was reported that bricks are being sold at each event.
Loopesko thanked Caremore for providing water and popcorn at the showing of "Big
Hero 6" in the Eisenhower Park Movie in the Park event. It was reported that the flower
arrangements at the Dinner Dance would be historical photo boxes.
C. Group discussion
Discussions were had as part of agenda item V-B.
D. Determine next meeting date & time
The Committee scheduled the next meeting for Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. in
