SUMMARY OF REQUEST:

Preservation Committee for the purpose of preserving resources that represent
the history and culture of Seal Beach.
BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS:
At its meeting of July 13, 2015 the City Council directed staff to prepare a staff
report that allows for the creation of a Historic Preservation Committee
comprised of citizens from each of the five (5) voting districts.
The City Council recognizes the importance of historic resources and the need to
preserve certain buildings as having special architectural, cultural, or historical
value. There is also a need to increase awareness of historic resources as the
best protection from structural alterations and demolition. By identifying and
sustaining historically significant buildings, the City strengthens community
identity and culturally enriches resident lives. Additionally, the preservation of
such buildings offers an educational resource to the community and visitors.
The establishment of a Historic Preservation Committee is an important step
towards ensuring the preservation of locally identified buildings of historical value
and the requirement for maintenance and enhancement of these buildings.

The purpose and goal of the Historic Preservation Committee is to provide the
following:
A. Guidance to the City in developing and implementing programs that
