HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Res 4802 2000-05-08 RESOLUTION NUMBER 1IPt'...2 A Resolution ofthe City Council of the City of Seal Beach Supporting ACR 98 Relative to U.S. Submarine Veterans WWII Memorial Highway WHEREAS, the V,S, Submarine Veterans WWII National Memorial West is located at the Seal I Beach Naval Weapons Station and honors the 52 boats and over 3,500 sailors lost on World War II submarines and the two submarines lost in the Cold War, the Thresher and the Scorpion, alld WHEREAS, tlus memorial was conceived, designed, built and is maintained by the Los Angeles Area Chapter of the V S, Submarine Veterans ofWWll, an organization that continues to selVe its community by doing volunteer work at the LOllg Beach Veterans Hospital and for families of service members at the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station and by participating in parades honoring our veterans and our country, alld WHEREAS, Ii'om December 7, 1941 to August ]4, 1945, the V.S Submarille Service comprised about 2 percent of naval personnel but accounted for 55 percent of the Pacific Theater's enemy losses and rescued hundreds of downed allied flyers, including former President George Bush; and WHEREAS, seven of these courageous submarines earned our nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, two of which were awarded posthumously after the recipient paid the ultimate price for freedom; and WHEREAS, the year 2000 marks the centennial anniversary of the commissioning of submarines in I the U.S. Navy; alld WHEREAS, Veterans of World War II are passing away at a rate of 10 percent per year and it would be appropriate to publicly honor their significant accomplishments and sacrifices while some survivors at still with us; and WHEREAS, this public display memorializing the achievements of veterans of submarine service will remind future generations of the sacrifices that their grandparents alld great grandparents made during World War II and stand as an eternal symbol that the State of California hOllors and remembers its veterans; and WHEREAS, it is fitting alld proper that the portion of State Highway Route I from the intersection of Gold West Street in Huntington Beach to the intersection of Westminster Avenue in LOllg Beach be desigllated V,S. Submarine Veteralls ofWWU Memorial Highway. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council ofthe City of Seal Beach supports the efforts to rename a portion of Pacific Coast Highway from Golden West Street in Huntington Beach to the intersectioll of Westminster Avellue in Long Beach as "V.S Submarine Veterans ofWWII Memorial Highway.
