RESOLUTION NUMBER~
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEAL BEACH AMf:NDING THE CLASSIFICATION PLAN
TO INCLUDE THE TEMPORARY POSITION OF CIVILIAN
POLICE RECRUIT AND SETTING A MONTHLY SALARY
I
WHEREAS, the need for a temporary position for Civilian Police Recruit has been
identified; and
WHEREAS, attached is the job description setting forth duties and responsibilities for
this temporary position, reviewed and recommended for approval by the
Civil Service Board in November, 1997; and
WHEREAS, the salary proposed is $2583 per month.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Seal Beach
to including the temporary position of Civilian Police Recruit in the classification plan
and establish a monthly salary.

DEI<lNITION
A non-swom civilian police training position performed while attending a Peace Officers
Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified police academy.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direct supervision from assigned Sergeant
ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS -- Essential and other imporlallt
responSibilities and duties may include, but are not linl/led 10. the followmg:
Essential Functions:
. Attends a P.O.S.T. certified basic academy to obtain formal training in police work associated
with the protection oflife and property.
. Performs related work as required during non-academy hours.
Marl!inal Functions:
. May perform non-sworn work in the Police Department's property, front desk, community
relations, photolI.D. lab or otJler department areas as assigned
o UALIFlCATIONS:
Knowlcdl!C of:
A variety of laws, policies and procedures covering modern methods of police work upon
completion of basic P.O.S.T. academy.
Use of firearms upon completion of basic P.O.S.T. academy.
Abilitv to:

Qualify for and satisfactorily meet the ongoing standards of a P.O.S T. certified basic police
academy.
Analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action including
emergency conditions.
Cope with situations finnly, courteously, and tactfully with respect for the rights of otllers.
Develop skills in the use of firearms.
Ability to:
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
including a variety of City and other goverlUnent officials and the general public.
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
AllY combinatiun of experience and training Ihal would likely provide the reqlllred knowledge and
abilities IS qualifying. A typical way tu obtain the knowledge and abil1t1es would be:
Trainilll!: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and sixty semester units or ninety
quarter units or more from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in police science,
or a related field upon completion of the basic police academy.
