DATE:
June 21, 2017
TO:
Honorable Chairperson and Commission Members
FROM:
Tim Kelsey, Recreation Manager
SUBJECT:
ARBOR DOG PARK
SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
That Commission provides direction to staff regarding the installation of a small
dog area within the existing fenced area of the Arbor Dog Park.
BACKGROUND:
The City of Seal Beach maintains and operates a 1.4 acre dog park located at
Arbor Park off of Lampson Avenue near Heather Street. The property is owned
by the United States Arbor and is under a 30 year agreement. The dog park is
the only park with the City's parks system that allows dogs to be off of leash.
The City has recently received several requests from residents and users of the
park to create a designated area for small dogs with in the existing dog park
area. Due to high use of Arbor Park it is not feasible to expand the already
existing dog park. At this time staff recommends that any consideration for the
inclusion of a small dog park be on a trial bases. Should the commission move
to recommend the formation of a small dog area the City will install temporary
fencing to designate the area. This will give staff the opportunity to monitor the
use and receive feedback from users before making the changes permanent.
Other issues that staff would like the commission to consider are;
1. What defines a small dog,
2. What corner of the park would be best suited,
3. How much space of the park should be designated for small dogs,
RECOMMENDATION:
That Commission provides direction to staff regarding the installation of a small
dog area within the existing fenced area of the Arbor Dog Park.
