RE: Priority one fixes for parks
BCC: CITY COUNCIL
In response to the Council inquiry below, our playgrounds are inspected by a certified inspector on an annual basis.
With respect to the inspections that were conducted in November 2016, the majority of all priority one items for all
Citywide playgrounds have been addressed, with the exception of the replacement of rubber protective surfacing, due
to the significant costs involved. Staff estimates the cost to replace all rubber protective surfacing, including surfacing,
mobilization of equipment, labor, etc. would be approximately $100,000 for all City parks.
In discussion with staff, given the significant costs, and based upon the direction of the Council, one option to address
the rubber protective surfacing would be to consider a Citywide project through the FY 18-19 CIP. For example, as has
been our practice for the ongoing maintenance and resurfacing of Citywide tennis and basketb courts, we budget
annually for this expenditure for replacement depending upon priority and the average life of a court resurface.
Please call if you have any additional questions or would like to discuss further.
