Bahorski, City Manager FROM: Paul Giera, Maintenance Services Manager SUBJECT: REMOVE CONCRETE PARKWAYS TO CREATE SPACE FOR PLANTING TREES IN COLLABORATION WITH TREES FOR SEAL BEACH SUMMARY OF REOUEST: The proposed action will be removal of 4790 square feet of concrete from City parkways, to create planting space for trees. This action is in cooperation with the National Tree Trust, Trees For Seal Beach and City of Seal Beach. BACKGROUND: This project is a result of work from members of the Trees For Seal Beach Committee's efforts to increase city plantings in line with urban forestry guidelines. Their application to the National Tree Trust resulted in approval of a $7,000 grant for planting trees along City parkways, which was based on a request of $350 per tree to cover both concrete/parkway removal, as well as planting and maintenance costs. The removal of concrete/parkway will be done in three phases Phase I: I& Street, Ocean Avenue to Electric — removal of 2456 sq. ft. of concrete Phase IL 11 a Street, Ocean to Electric — removal of 1322 sq. ft. of concrete Phase III: Central Ave., 10' Street to 12' Street — removal of 1022 sq. ft. of concrete Staff will notify the adjoining residents, 5 working days prior to removals. The grant proposes to place sod and plant materials but the property owner would be responsible for maintenance. FISCAL IMPACT: The total cost of the project is $18,230.00. The cost to the City is equivalent to $5,000 in 'In-kind" labor. The balance of expenses will be met from the grant funds of $7,000, and from Citizen donations: 0 The total cost of the project is $18,230.00.
