AGENDA REPORT
I
DATE: March 3, 2002
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
THROUGH: John B. Bahorski, City Manager
FROM: Michael F. Sellers, Chief of Police
SUBJECT: Pacific Coast Highway Closure
SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
Staff requests City Council approve the attached resolution to allow the temporary
closure of Pacific Coast Highway at Seal Beach Boulevard for the Seal Beach 10 /5K Run
on April 6, 2002.
BACKGROUND:
In recent years the Seal Beach 10 /5K Run has traveled a route that was primarily on the
Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station. Subsequent to the events of September 11, 2001, the
Run can no longer follow this same course. This year's 10K route will travel down 1"
Street to Ocean Avenue, east on Ocean Avenue to Seal Beach Boulevard, north on Seal
Beach Boulevard across Pacific Coast Highway to Westminster, west on Westminster to
the San Gabriel River Bike Trail and then south on the bike trail back to the area of I"
and Marina.
This route requires a temporary closure of Pacific Coast Highway at Seal Beach
Boulevard fiom about 5:10 A.M. on Saturday morning April 6, 2002, until approximately
8:30 A.M. Barricades, signage, staff and volunteers for this temporary closure will be
provided by the Seal Beach 10 /5K Run and the City of Seal Beach. In prior years the
10K race followed this same route and this temporary closure was accomplished without
any significant problem.
Formal application for approval of this closure has been made to Cal Trans, who also
requires a Council Resolution for approval of this closure.
FISCAL IMPACT:
This temporary closure represents virtually no fiscal impact on the City, and the staff
time required to assist the Seal Beach 10 /5K Run with the closure is minimal.
