HomeMy WebLinkAboutSupplemental - Letter and Petition to Save Pear Blossoming Trees on Aster and BasswoodCraig's Landscape DESIGN • INSTALLATION • MAINTENANCE Lic. # 734744 March 11, 2002 Old Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors RE: Fireblight and Root Rot of Pym Kawakamii'Bvergreen Pear' trees located at Old Ranch. To Whom It May Concern: My name is Craig Bedard. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in the Horticultural Sciences from California Polytechnic State University of San Luis Obispo. I am a practicing California licensed landscape contractor (734744) and California Certified Nurserymen. I am personally aware of the trey that are planted along Aster and Basswood streets because I had lived in the College Park area for 35 years. After reading the proposal from Southern California Gardens and the memo by the Hoard of Directors, I would litre you to please consider the following professional suggestions. Upon a sole visual inspection I find it nearly impossible to come up with a conclusive diagnosis of Rom Rot. I suggest a more thorough inspection of the root systems and a pathological chemical analysis be completed in order to determine the presence of a bacterial root rot organism. Before the expenditure is made to a plant pathologist the roots should be physically inspected by taking a sample and determining if the outer layer of the root (root pericap) can easily be sloughed off. If Root Rot is determined by a pathological test I would recommend the following: • Reduce the overall canopy of the tree and lace out The canopies need to be reduced because of the damage done to the root system by the bacteria • Reduce water frequency. • Soil around the bees should be performed with three 2 to 3 inch diameter holes that are 2 to 3 feet in depth and back- filled with a high organic material mixed with soil sulfur and iron sulfate. • Remove the grass around the trees in a 36 inch diameter and amend with additional organic material. The idea behind these treatments is to lower the pH of the soil so that the Root Rot organisms pin nee thrive. Fireblight is the scorching appearance to the twigs branches and leaves caused by a bacterial organism often transported by insects and rainwater It is important to rote tem Fimblight is very common to Flowering Pear trees. It often goes entreated and does not always cause demise of the tree. Treatments of Fireblight include cutting out of Fireblight broaches, cutting below effected areas and disinfecting shears with a Clorox solution in-between cuts. The diseased trees can also be sprayed during the blooming season with a Copper Bordeaux, solution The recommendation to lace out the trees at a two year interval is a good practice to discourage both Fireblight and Roo Rot. In conclusion, I would offer to the Board ofDirectors and Homeowners tem the trees no be removed without a pathological rest done to den mane that the Roo Rot organism is present As for the Firebliglued trees, my above recommendations should be all that is necessary and will preserve the existing trees.
