Bahorski, City Manager FROM: Doug Danes, P.E., Director of Public Works/City Engineer SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR ANNUAL CONCRETE REHABILITATION PROGRAM FY 2001/2002, PROJECT No. 49675 SUMMARY OF REQUEST: The proposed City Council action will approve the plans and specifications, and authorize Staff to initiate the bidding process for the Annual Concrete Rehabilitation Program, Project No. 49675. BACKGROUND: The proposed project will rehabilitate approximately 4000 square feet of sidewalk in the 100 block of Main Street. This program replaces portions of deteriorated concrete between existing trees in an effort to reduce the backlog of concrete repairs. The Public Works Department Tree Preservation Program will replace sidewalk in front of existing trees with brick pavers. Engineering Staff chose this area because of its high pedestrian traffic which will reduce possible situations for pedestrians. In addition to the high pedestrian traffic areas being corrected, the maintenance division will make repairs to other areas in the City on an ongoing basis. Currently there is an $8 million dollar backlog of concrete repairs in the City. In an effort to save the Ficus trees on Main St., Staff has initiated an "in- house" Tree Preservation Program with the use of brick pavers. City Public Works Crews remove the uplifted sidewalk adjacent to the tree, prune the mots and replace the section with brick pavers. The goal of the Public Works Department is to have brick pavers around all existing trees within the next 2 ybars. The plans and specifications were completed by in -house staff. Upon the successful bidding process and award of a contract, the project should be completed around the end of the fiscal year in June. Agenda Item f+ FISCAL IMPACT: Funds are currently available within the City's Capital Improvement program budget to construct these improvements under project number 49675. The City's budgeted amount is $50,000 from State Gas Tax. Any remaining funds would be reprogrammed for next year's street program as approved by City Council. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council approve the plans and specifications, and authorize Staff to initiate the bidding process for the Annual Concrete Rehabilitation Program, Project No. 49675, Prepared By: // Marc K.
