DATE:
January 28, 2002
TO:
Honorable Mayor and City Council
THRU:
John B. Bahorski, City Manager
FROM:
Doug Danes Director of Public Works
SUBJECT:
Street Tree Inventory Presentation
SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
Council to receive presentation on City Street Inventory,
BACKGROUND:
The Seal Beach Public Works Department developed a citywide tree inventory and management
system. The tree survey was performed by tree contractor and imported into the system. The
purpose of this database is to better assist staff, the tree committee and members of the
community with the understanding of management of City trees. The program lists all city street
trees within the City limits. Reports and spreadsheets can be generated by streets, neighborhoods,
botanical names, common names, vacancies, tree trimming cycles, sidewalk issues, crown
widths, tree heights, and trunk diameters.
Benefits of accurate records will assist the City with better accounting and management of trees.
Budgets will also be updated to reflect the true cost of maintaining our Urban Forest. Our annual
tree contractor will be required to update records on a regular basis as part of their contract.
Future goals for the program include valuating the worth of our urban forest, cross - reference and
tracking tree species to parkway width as well as displacements to the sidewalk.
The next major step in our program is to locate the coordinates of each tree so data can be
imported to the Engineering Division, Geographic Information System (GIS). This will allow
better graphic representation and decision making for the City's urban forest.

Tree Inventory
Department of Public Works
Goals of Tree Inventory
• To proactively manage the City's Urban
Forest.
Public Works Philosophy: Need to inventory
all aspects of the City's Infrastructure for
proper asset management
• To provide more detailed information to
the citizens and City Council
Break inventory down by areas and
neighborhoods.
Goals
■ To evaluate the worth of our Urban Forest
and the costs for maintaining.
■ To provide up to date data for reports,
analysis and planning.
Integrate with other Public Works
Infrastructure including sewers and sidewalk.
■ To identify conflicts and budget accordingly: track
tree species to parkway width as well as
displacement of the sidewalk
Previous ree aria
System under Parks
• Duplication of Effort
City used Old Outdated DOS program.
■ Labor intensive to maintain accurate records
Tree Contractor maintained separate database
but City only had access to raw data.
• Reports and output were limited.
• Information could not be leveraged or
networked.
Migration to New System —
Public Works
• Data from Contractor's survey was
imported into a new database system.
• Custom Reports were created to better
define the qualities of our urban forest.
5
Advantages
• System is user friendly
• Networked, allows simultaneous use
• Enhance reporting and statitistics
• Budgets will show true cost of maintaining
Urban Forest
■ Data can be linked to the Public Works
Dept GIs system.
