HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem LAGENDA REPORT DATE: January 28, 2002 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council THRU: John B. Bahorski, City Manager FROM: Doug Danes Director of Public Works SUBJECT: Street Tree Inventory Presentation SUMMARY OF REQUEST: Council to receive presentation on City Street Inventory, BACKGROUND: The Seal Beach Public Works Department developed a citywide tree inventory and management system. The tree survey was performed by tree contractor and imported into the system. The purpose of this database is to better assist staff, the tree committee and members of the community with the understanding of management of City trees. The program lists all city street trees within the City limits. Reports and spreadsheets can be generated by streets, neighborhoods, botanical names, common names, vacancies, tree trimming cycles, sidewalk issues, crown widths, tree heights, and trunk diameters. Benefits of accurate records will assist the City with better accounting and management of trees. Budgets will also be updated to reflect the true cost of maintaining our Urban Forest. Our annual tree contractor will be required to update records on a regular basis as part of their contract. Future goals for the program include valuating the worth of our urban forest, cross - reference and tracking tree species to parkway width as well as displacements to the sidewalk. The next major step in our program is to locate the coordinates of each tree so data can be imported to the Engineering Division, Geographic Information System (GIS). This will allow better graphic representation and decision making for the City's urban forest. 12 F.19YA 0 1 16AXIM IF None RECOMMENDATION: Receive and File report Agenda Item L, Doug 1P. o Public Works/City Engineer NOTED AND APPROVED: ii Agenda Item APPENDIX Summary: Trees by Botanical Name Summary: Trees by Common Name Summary: Trees by Crown Summary: Trees by Diameter Summary: Trees by Height Summary: Trees by Neighborhood Summary: Trees by Street Summary: Vacancies by Neighborhood Summary: Vacancies by Street Page 1 of 2 TREE Inventory: Summary: Trees by Botanical Name TOTALS notanitel Named` Trea count Acacia baloyana 20 20 Ater palmatum 1 l Ater saccbarinum 12 12 Albizia julibnson 3 3 Altus rho ntifolin 2 2 Araucania heterophylla 2 2 Arcbontopbcenlx cunningham. 31 31 Arecastrum mmanzoffanum 1 395 395 in ubinla Flakeana 3 3 Bauhinia suns ata 2 2 Betula pendula 4 4 Betula spin. 2 2 Bracbyclnton acerifogus 2 2 Erabea edulis 2 2 Callistemon citnnus 24 24 Callistemon vimina0s 2 2 Cadmus atlantica 1 1 Ceratonia siliqua 45 45 Cinnamomum copulation, 19 19 Cupaniopsis anacardioides 139 139 Cupressocynaris leylandii 1 1 Cupinawas semnervirens 3 3 Erl0botrya daBexa 3 3 Enotorya japonica 1 1 Erythnua caMa 15 16 EryMnna spin. 4 4 Eucalyptus camaldulensis 6 6 Eucalyptus cinerea 1 1 Eucalyptus citriodora 1591 159 Eucalyptus e,th -lar, 1 1 Eucalyptus ficifolla 14 14 Eucalyptus polyanMemos 1 1 Eucalyptus rudis 78 28 Eucalyptus sldemxylon 26 26 Eucalyptus spp. 4 4 Flcus benjamina 13 13 Flcus carica 2 2 FICFA mlc.rpa'Nidda' 157 152 Flcus mblglnosa 62 62 Fprtunella..,ant, 1 1 Fraxlnus undel 2 2 Fmxinus velutina 4 4 Geijama po,ftra 4 4 Ginkgo biloba 1 1 Gletlitsla tnacanMOS 2 2 Grevlllea mbusta 4 4 Jacaranda mimosdmia 14 14 Juniperus mmensis 1 t lagerstrdemia indca 48 48 Cigustrum lucitlum 5 5 Page 2 of 2 Bobnical Name Records; Tna Count Uquidambar styraciflua 91 91 Magnolia grandiflor. 115 115 Melaleuca quinquenemia 124 124 Metrosideros excelsus Be 64 Morns alb. t 1 Nedum oleander 84 84 Olea eumpaea 43 43 Other tree 21 21 Palm spp. 12 12 Phoenix canarlensls 111 111 Phatinia (rased 4 4 Pinus cananensls 60 60 Pinus halepensis 1 1 Pinus spp. 4 4 Pinus thunberglana 5 5 Pistacia chinensis 1 1 Mosporum undulatum 6 6 Matanus acerifolla 9 9 Platanus racemosa 37 37 Podocarpus gracillor 13 13 Podocarpus macmphYllus 2 2 Prunuz caroliniana 14 14 Prunus cerasifera 8 8 Prunus per ice 2 2 Pyrus betullfolia 9 9 Pyms calleryana 102 102 Pyms kawakamil 203 203 Rhapiu. %'Majesic Beauty' 2 2 Robin. pseudoacacia 62 62 ScM1inus molle 1 1 ScM1inus terebinNifalius 107 107 Stenocarpus sinuatus 1 1 Tlpuana tipu 1 1 Trachycarpus fortunei 10 10 TnMNO eonferta 62 62 Tnstania laurina 5 5 Ulmus pa"Ifolia 29 Ulmus pumila 2 Washingtonia filaem 1 12 Washingtonia robusta 288 Yucca glonosa 3 TOTAIS(91 groups) 30]4 Page 1 of 2 TREE Inventory: Summary: Trees by Common Name TOTALS Common Neme RKObe Tree Count ALEPPO PINE 1 l AMERICAN SWEETGUM 91 91 ARIZONA ASH 4 4 ATLAS CEDAR I 1 AUSTRALIAN WILLOW 4 4 BAILEY ACACIA 20 20 BIRCH 2 2 BLACK LOCUST 62 62 BOTTLEBRUSH 24 24 BRAZILIAN PEPPER 107 107 BRISBANE BOX 62 62 BRONZE LOQUAT 3 3 CAJEPUT TREE 124 124 CALIFORNIA FAN PALM l 1 CALIFORNIA PEPPER 1 1 CALIFORNIA SYCAMORE 37 32 CAMPHOR TREE 19 19 CANARY ISLAND DATE PALM 111 111 CANARY ISLAND PINE 60 CAROB 45 CAROLINA LAUREL CHERRY 14 CARROTWOOD 139 CHINESE ELM 29 P748 CHINESE PISTACHE 1 CORAL TREE 4 CRAPE MYRTLE 48 DANCER PEAR 9 DESERT GUM 78 EDIBLE FIG 2 2 EDIBLE LOQUAT 1 I EUCALYPTUS SPECIES 4 4 EVERGREEN PEAR 203 203 FERN PINE 13 13 FIREWHEEL TREE I 1 FLAME TREE 2 2 FRASER'S PHOTINIA 4 4 GLOSSY PRIVET 5 5 GUADALUPE PALM 7 7 HONEY LOCUST 2 2 HONG KONG ORCHID TREE 3 3 INDIAN HAWTMORNE 2 2 INDIAN LAUREL FIG 157 157 ITALIAN CYPRESS 3 3 JAGRANDA l4 14 JAPANESE BLACK PINE 5 5 JAPANESE MAPLE 1 1 JUNIPER 1 KAFFIRSOOM CORAL TREE Ifi 16 KING PALM 31 31 KUMQUAT 11 1 Page 2 of 2 Common Name Records I. Public Works Philosophy: Need to inventory all aspects of the City's Infrastructure for proper asset management • To provide more detailed information to the citizens and City Council Break inventory down by areas and neighborhoods. Goals ■ To evaluate the worth of our Urban Forest and the costs for maintaining. ■ To provide up to date data for reports, analysis and planning. Integrate with other Public Works Infrastructure including sewers and sidewalk. ■ To identify conflicts and budget accordingly: track tree species to parkway width as well as displacement of the sidewalk Previous ree aria System under Parks • Duplication of Effort City used Old Outdated DOS program. ■ Labor intensive to maintain accurate records Tree Contractor maintained separate database but City only had access to raw data. • Reports and output were limited. • Information could not be leveraged or networked. Migration to New System — Public Works • Data from Contractor's survey was imported into a new database system. • Custom Reports were created to better define the qualities of our urban forest. 5 Advantages • System is user friendly • Networked, allows simultaneous use • Enhance reporting and statitistics • Budgets will show true cost of maintaining Urban Forest ■ Data can be linked to the Public Works Dept GIs system. 6 F S3' g Sample GIS Trimming Schedule x '. ,Y Tool to Identify Conflicts What have we learned with the preliminary efforts of the Public Works Department? 10 Tree Height 600 1a00 f 1300 1000 5 NO NO aa0 00 0 1b15fl 1530* 30A5R 4580R 60.R Tree HoW 1I Diameter of Trees Diameter Trees 0 -6 in 894 7 -12 in 1435 13 -18 in 529 19 -24 in 79 25 -30 in 30 31+ in 107 low wo Wo 12 Crown T Trees 1 -15 2 2450 77% 14 Crown Trees T Crown of Trees 1 -15 ft 2450 15 -30 ft 583 30 -45 ft 37 45 -60 ft 3 60+ ft- 1 14 15 A .
