HomeMy WebLinkAboutSupplemental - Comment on potential expansion of Los Alamitos and Long Beach airportsHi Seal Beach
I'd like to talk about an issue that impacts both of our cities. That is the potential
expansion of Los Alamitos and Long Beach Airports. I myself am under the Long Beach
flight path. I can hear the jets indoors, and they fly low enough for me to identify the
carrier. I can only imagine they would be even lower and louder in Seal Beach. I do have
to feel real sorry for Leisure World, not only do they have Long Beach runway pointed
right at them, there is also the runway from Los Alamitos. Now that's a double whammy!
Opponents of El Toro simply couldn't just say please don't build it, it will impact
our community. They should have stopped right there. But instead they have called for
airports located in ABET (Anywhere But El Toro). In fact in 1985 it was Irvine that sued
to have John Wayne Expanded. This was before the cold war ended and El Toro was
closed.
Irvine Councilman Mike Ward in a letter signed as ETRPA chain to the OC Board of
Supervisors:
"Why can't we work together with the federal govermnent, County's cities and
business community, and identify a site near El Toro like a portion of Camp
Pendleton ... .... or even explore the options that may be available at the Los Alamitos
Armed Forces Reserve Center?
AND
"Ontario Airport and Long Beach Airport are operating below capacity, "
(Never mind that it is the 2°" busiest aviation facility in the nation!)
This is a letter from Irvine Councilman Greg Smith which to the LA Times on 06/21/98:
"Fortunately, we have a better alternative to El Toro right here in Orange County: the
Los Alamitos Armed Forces Reserve Center. "
"Building a commercial airoort at Los Alamitos is the ceded answer to future air
passenger and cargo needs. Geographically, it's ideally situated Because Las Alamitos
is near the ocean, with no mountains close by, flight operations could be optimized "
"Takeoffs could be routed over the open spaces of the Seal Beach Naval Weapons
Station, minimizing noise and pollution The runways are long enough to accommodate
the larger aircraft necessary for cross -country and international flights without expensive
reconstruction. "
Gee that's just brilliant, proponents of a so called "Central Park and Nature
Preserve" would route jets over a National Wildlife Refuge located on the Seal Beach
NWS. If there's anything good at all about your property values being lowered, it means
you will owe less property tax to Irvine mayor Larry Agran for his great park.
