Dear Mayor Campbell:
AMERICAN
LUNG
ASSOCIATION®
of Orange County
Each year during the month of November, the American Lung Association of
Orange County focuses its efforts on promoting the influenza vaccine to all
Orange County residents. For healthy children and adults, influenza is typically a
moderately severe illness, but for unhealthy or elderly people, influenza can be
very dangerous. In fact, adults 65 years and older and those who have
compromised immune systems that contract influenza are much more likely to
have serious complications from this illness.
The influenza vaccine can prevent influenza and reduce the severity of the
influenza with a 60 -90% effectiveness rate. The hlfluenza Coalition, which
consists of local county agencies, health organizations, and non -profit agencies,
provides hundreds of free flu clinics, educates the public on the importance of the
vaccine, and promotes locations where vaccines are available.
Enclosed is a sample proclamation declaring November 2001 as Influenza
Prevention Month. Please support our efforts to improve and protect the quality
of lung health by challenging every citizen in your community to actively
participate in Influenza Prevention Month. Your proclamation will be displayed
at the American Lung Association of Orange County office, demonstrating to all
of our volunteers and participants your commitment to promote lung health. Your
support also will be recognized on our website.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Pimentel
