Each year our nation designates the second week in October as Fire
Prevention Week. Across the nation, communities and their fire
departments use this opportunity to direct the public attention to the
importance of fire safety. As part of this effort, OCFA fire stations will
conduct open house tours and disseminate information regarding fire safety
on Saturday October 13, 2001.
Your Council may have already agendized this resolution for presentation as
part of this yearly tribute. However, due to the unprecedented number of
firefighters who lost their lives in the September I i`s World Trade Center
tragedy, I am also asking that October 13`s be proclaimed a day of
remembrance and reflection. In observance of this proclamation, we will be
asking that a moment of silence be observed at noon on that day.
I have enclosed a copy of an amended version of the proclamation, which
includes the addition of our requcst for a moment of silence on October 13,
2001, at noon.
I would appreciate your support in recognition of this terrible tragedy as a
tribute to those who lost their lives. If you have any questions or need
additional details, please feel free to contact me directly or Battalion Chief
Scott Brown at (714)289 -3722.

The Honorable William Doane
City of Seal Beach
2118"' Street
Seal Beach. CA 92683
Dear Mayor Doane,
Each year the National Fire Protection Association designates one week in October dedicated to
fire prevention. This week is sponsored, along with fire departments throughout the nation, in an
effort to bring to focus the importance of fire safety in the home and in the community.
This year's campaign will be held October 7 through October 13 and the theme is "Cover the
Bases & Strike Out Fire! ". The theme uses a baseball diamond as a visual cue to remind
everyone of the importance of fire safety in the home. First base is for kitchen safety, heating
safety is at second base and electrical safety at third. Home plate serves as a reminder to conduct
smoke alarm testing and home fire escape planning with all family members.
The Orange County Fire Authority will sponsor an Open House on Saturday, October 13, 2001
from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at all of its fire stations throughout the county. Firefighters will be
on hand to answer questions, conduct station tours, set up special displays and safety
demonstrations for the public.
We solicit your support by proclaiming October 7 -13 as Fire Prevention Week. We would like a
Resolution to be presented at the City Council Meeting on October 9, 2001. A representative
from our department will be present to accept the resolution. Please confirm this date with the
Community Relations/Education Services Section at (714) 532 -7266.
Thank you for your efforts and consideration in this matter.
Respectfully,
L42
