WHEREAS, early detection methods, improved treatment
techniques and patient education are helping more
cancer patients survive their disease than at any time
in history; and
WHEREAS, between 1960 and 1963, only 39 percent of cancer
patients lived five years after diagnosis; and
WHEREAS, twice as many cancer patients now survive five years or
more after the initial diagnosis, survival rate for cancer
having grown to over 60 &; and
WHEREAS, the fourteenth annual Cancer Survivors Day will be
celebrated simultaneously in more than 700
communities across America on June 3, 2001; and
WHEREAS, this year's event will, as in the past, pay tribute to the
millions of Americans who are living with a history of
cancer, honoring their courage and perseverance and
raise awareness of the issues faced by cancer
survivors; and
WHEREAS, the Cancer Support Foundation, having provided emotional and practical
support to cancer patients in west Orange County, including Cypress, Los
Alamitos, Seal Beach and the greater Long Beach area since 1980, is
sponsoring a Celebration of Life in honor of Cancer Survivors Day on June
3, 2001, inviting all cancer survivors in the community to participate.
NOW, THEREFORE, 1, , Mayor, on behalf of the City
Council of the City of Seal Beach, hereby proclaim June, 3, 2001 as
"Cancer Survivors Day"
in the City of Seal Beach and urge all citizens to participate in the 2001 Celebration of Life.
IN WITNESS, WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of
Seal Beach to be affixed this Twenty -Ninth Day of May, in the Year Two Thousand -one.
