'World Alzheimer's Awareness Month"
September 2017
WHEREAS, on average, 650 people die each year in boating- related accidents
in the U.S.; approximately three- fourths of these are fatalities caused by
drowning; and
WHEREAS, the Nation, State of California and City of Seal Beach observe
World Alzheimer's Month during the month of September; and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease, a progressive neurodegenerative brain
disorder, tragically robs individuals of their moments and leads to progressive
mental and physical impairments; and
WHEREAS, more than 84,000 residents in Orange County and over 5 million
Americans are currently living with Alzheimer's disease; and
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the third leading cause of death in Orange
County and sixth leading cause in the nation; and
WHEREAS, each year, family caregivers provide 1,139 hours of care per
individual with Alzheimer's and working family caregivers cost California
businesses $1.4 billion in lost productivity annually; and
WHEREAS, the mission of Alzheimer's Orange County is to provide hands -on
care and support, information, referrals, education and resources for families
in Orange County and surrounding areas who experience memory loss,
Alzheimer's and other dementias, while advancing critical research for a cure.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sandra Massa- Lavitt, on behalf of the Seal Beach City
Council, do hereby proclaim the month of September, 2017, as World
Alzheimer's Awareness Month in the city of Seal Beach.
