HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem DP PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the United States Surgeon General states that mental health is fundamental to health and indispensable to personal well - being, family and interpersonal relationships; and WHEREAS, mental illness will strike one in five Americans in a given year regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion or economic status; and WHEREAS, there are widespread misunderstandings and discrimination concerning mental health which can be removed by recognizing that mental illnesses are real, common and treatable. NOW THEREFORE, I, PATRICIA E. CAMPBELL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF SEAL BEACH, do hereby proclaim May, 2001 as Mental Health Month in the City of Seal Beach to increase awareness and understanding of mental illnesses and the need for appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental illnesses. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this is a time for our community to acknowledge the importance of mental health and take action to ensure that individuals with mental illnesses have access to the care, treatment and prevention services they need. The U.S. Surgeon General states that mental health is fundamental to health and indispensable to personal well - being, family and interpersonal relationships, and contributes to community and society and that mental illness will strike one in five Americans in a given year regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion or economic status. However, there are widespread misunderstandings and discrimination concerning mental health. Senseless barriers such as stigma, misunderstanding and discrimination can be tom down by recognizing that mental illnesses are real, common, and treatable. May is Mental Health Month, a time for our community to acknowledge the importance of mental health and take action to ensure that individuals with mental illnesses have access to the care, treatment, and prevention services they need. Therefore, on behalf of the Mental Health Board, I urge you to proclaim May 2001 as Mental Health Month in Seal Beach. I call upon you to increase awareness and understanding of mental illnesses and the need for appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental illnesses.
