In May, the Orange County Mental Health Board will receive a proclamation from the Orange
County Board of Supervisors proclaiming May as National Mental Heath Month.
The U.S. Surgeon General states that mental health is fundamental to health and indispensable to
personal well - being, family and interpersonal relationships, and contributes to community and
society and that mental illness will strike one in five Americans in a given year regardless of age,
gender, race, ethnicity, religion or economic status.
However, there are widespread misunderstandings and discrimination concerning mental health.
Senseless barriers such as stigma, misunderstanding and discrimination can be tom down by
recognizing that mental illnesses are real, common, and treatable.
May is Mental Health Month, a time for our community to acknowledge the importance of
mental health and take action to ensure that individuals with mental illnesses have access to the
care, treatment, and prevention services they need.
Therefore, on behalf of the Mental Health Board, I urge you to proclaim May 2001 as Mental
Health Month in Seal Beach. I call upon you to increase awareness and understanding of mental
illnesses and the need for appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental illnesses.
Sincerely,
12 1
