WHEREAS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or ALS is a fatal, neumdegenerative disease, often
known as Lou Gehrig's disease; and
WHEREAS, this progressive disorder occurs when motor nerve cells cease to function and die
and muscle control becomes completely lost; and
WHEREAS, approximately every 90 minutes, another American is diagnosed with the disease,
nearly 5600 people in a year; and
WHEREAS, ALS can strike anyone, does not discriminate against gender, age or race, and is
fatal from 2 -5 years after diagnosis; and
WHEREAS, promoting nationwide awareness and understanding of ALS is of utmost
importance and during the month of May, the ALS Association, Orange County
Chapter, is dedicated solely to the fight against ALS and will launch a month long
series of activities to raise awareness; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Patricia E. Campbell, Mayor of the City of Seal
Beach, do hereby proclaim the month of May, 2001 as
National ALS Awareness Month
in the City of Seal Beach and urge our citizens to join the ALS Association's fight against this
fatal disease.
IN WITNESS, WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Seal
Beach to be affixed this Twenty-Third Day of April, in the Year 2001.
