AGENDA REPORT 17 /,
Date: November 13, 2000
TO: Mayor and Members of the City Council
THRU: Donald F. McIntyre, City Manager
FROM: Ginger Bennington, Administrative Assistant
SUBJECT: PERS Health Program
SUMMARY OF REQUEST:
That Council adopt the attached resolution notifying PERS Health Benefits Division of a change
in the medical caps for safety employees.
BACKGROUND:
The City has contracted with the CaIPERS retirement system to provide health insurance to full-
time employees. At the time of the contract for safety employees, a provision of the contract
required the City to notify the PERS Health Program of any change in health insurance caps
allowed for active safety employees. Under the terms of the existing contract, the portion the
City pays for retired safety employees who continue their health insurance with PERS, increases
each calendar year by 5% of the medical caps in effect for current employees.
With the approval of the three-year contract for safety employees, it is now appropriate to notify
PERS of those change in health insurance benefits.
FISCAL IMPACT
Short tern impact is minimal - less than $200 annual increase to health insurance billing for
retired safety employees.
RECOMMENDATION:
Upon approval of the consent calendar, it is recommended that Council approve Proposed
Resolution No. 4858 notifying the CaIPERS Health Benefits Division of a change in health caps
for sworn safety employees.
