HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Res 4360 1995-01-09 RESOLUTION NUMBER ~o / A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEAL BEACH DECLARING FUNDS GENERATED FROM THE PASSAGE OF PROPOSITION 172 BE UTILIZED FOR THEIR INTENDED PURPOSE WHEREAS, on November 2, 1993, the people of the State of California approved passage of proposition 172, the "Local Public Safety Protection and Improvement Act of 1993. "Proposition 172 provided law enforcement, as well as other public safety agencies the funding needed to maintain and enhance public safety with the implementation of an extension of a one half of one percent sales tax." WHEREAS, the funds resulting from the passage of Proposition 172 must be directed to those public safety agencies to combat crime and provide safe streets for California's residents, and must not be redirected for other purposes, and WHEREAS, pending legislation in the form of Assembly Bill 2788 mandates that the funds provided by Proposition 172 be utilized as intended, to support public safety agencies in the State of California; and WHEREAS, it is the primary task of the Statewide Vehicle Theft Advisory Committee to address the significant vehicle theft problem in California, and the largest property crime in the nation; and WHEREAS, the Statewide Vehicle Theft Advisory Committee believes that public concern about crime and the need for increased funding for law enforcement is widely recognized. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Seal Beach support the Statewide Vehicle Theft Advisory Committee and urge the State Legislature to declare the fu~ds generated from the passage of Proposition 172 not be supplanted and be utilized for their intended purpose, for the support of California's public safety agencies for the combating of vehicle theft and crime in general to ensure a safe and crime free California.
