At that time the Board deferred action on the resolution and requested that a copy be sent to each of the member cities so that it could be considered first by the respective Councils. That resolution is enclosed for your reference. It is anticipated that a similar resolution will be presented to the Huntington Beach City Council in February. If your Council chooses to adopt a similar resolution,please contact Senior Analyst Ken Dills so that this item can be placed on the next West Orange County Water Board agenda. Dills, Senior Department Analyst-Huntington Beach Terry Lane, Water Services Manager,Garden Grove Bob Harris, Water Supervisor, Seal Beach Gary Heffelfinger, Water Supervisor, Westminster U RESOLUTION NO. 99-02 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE WEST ORANGE COUNTY INTER BOARD URGING THE GOVERNOR AND LEGISLATIOR TO PROHIBIT THE USE OF METHYL TERTIARY-BUTYL ETHER GASOLINE. WHEREAS, The West Orange County Water Board ("WOCWB") is a joint powers agency which operates various potable water systems in order to serve the populace within portions of Orange County; and WHEREAS, the Board of Directors (the "Board") of WOCWB is concerned with issues that may affect water quality and the water transported and delivered by WOCWB facilities; and WHEREAS, Methyl Tertiary-Butyl Ether ("MTBE") is a known carcinogen, which is included as a gasoline additive, that does not biodegrade in the environment and is difficult and expensive to remove once it is in the water supply; and WHEREAS, WOCWB member agencies and customers should not bear the burden of expensive treatment costs when the problem could be stopped at the source; and WHEREAS, WOCWB believes that coordinated statewide as well as industry- wide efforts are essential to protect California's water resources and water quality and the agencies and customers who rely on a safe and reliable drinking water source. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, DETERMINED AND ORDERED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE WEST ORANGE COUNTY WATER BOARD AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. That the Board hereby urges the Governor and the California Legislature to lead a statewide effort to require that petroleum companies remove MTBE from gasoline. Section 2. The WOCWB Secretary and staff are authorized to provide copies of this Resolution to the Governor's office and to such other offices and agencies as will assist in carrying out the purpose of this Resolution.
