Till, City Manager SUBJECT: U.S. Submarine Veterans Memorial SUMMARY OF REQUEST: That the City Council pass a motion to support the efforts of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II in designating the Submarine Memorial at the Naval Weapons Facility, Seal Beach as an historical site. BACKGROUND: The Submarine Veterans of World War II proudly erected a memorial on the Naval Weapons Facility, Seal Beach to honor those shipmates who gave their lives in U.S. Submarines during World War II. A bronze plaque for each of the 52 submarines defending the United States in WWII and the names of the crew members lost in that war is located in the memorial. This site honors the sacrifice of the 3,506 officers and enlisted men who lost their lives defending the United States and is still visited each Veteran's and Memorial Day by crewmates or family members. The U.S. Submarine Veterans of WWII are making application to the Orange County Historical Commission and the California Office of Historic Preservation to make this memorial an historic site and are asking the City's support in their efforts. RECOMMENDATION: That Council authorize the Mayor's signature on a letter in support of the U.S. Submarine Veteran's of World War II's efforts to designate the Submarine Veterans Memorial as an historical site. Attachment: Letter of Support to Orange County Historical Commission and the California Office of Historic Preservation with copies to State and County legislators. The memorial contains 52 bronze plaques representing each of the submarines used in WWII and lists the 3,506 officers and enlisted men who lost their lives in defense of the United States of America. The memorial is revered by the remaining crew members and is visited by friends and family members on Veterans and Memorial Day. The Submarine Veterans are making application to the Orange County Historical Commission and to the California Office of Historic Preservation to designate this memorial as an historical site within the City of Seal Beach. This effort has our wholehearted support. To promote and preserve the memory and recognition of these veterans is well deserved. We maintain a memorial at the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station. There are plaques for the 52 submarines with the names of the crews lost in WWII. This is a unique site in all of California that honors the sacrifice of the 3,506 officers and enlisted men who are on eternal patrol defending the United States of America. Our goal is to designate this memorial as a Historical Site with the city, county, state, and national registries. Would you please support our effort when we submit our application to the Orange County Historical Commission and to the California Office of Historic Preservation?A letter from you with your endorsement would help our chances to promote and preserve the memory and recognition these and all veterans deserve.
