HomeMy WebLinkAboutSupplemental - Moms Demand Action MOMS= Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America DEMAND (www.momsdemandaction.org) is a grassroots, non-partisan movement of ACTION Americans fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA gun violence and keep our families safe. Moms Demand Action has a chapter in every state and, along with Mayors Against Illegal Guns,Students Demand Action and the Everytown Survivor Network, it is part of the nation's largest gun violence prevention organization, Everytown for Gun Safety, with more than 5 million supporters. Moms Demand Action works with survivors, mayors, law enforcement officers, faith leaders, educators, gun owners, doctors and communities across the country who know there is more we can do to prevent gun violence. We do this work because every day 100 Americans die from gun violence and hundreds more are wounded. Gun violence is the second leading cause of death for American children and teens overall and the first leading cause of death for Black children and teens. The daily toll of gun violence in America doesn't always make headlines, but this violence affects everyone, everywhere. It strikes big cities, small towns and rural communities. We can support responsible gun ownership while doing much more to keep guns out of the wrong hands and create a culture of gun safety. That's why we advocate for the following, evidence-based policies to keep our families and communities safe: • Keeping Guns Out of the Wrong Hands-A Better Background Check System. Lawmakers need to close loopholes in the system, such as those that allow people to buy guns without a background check. • Protecting Kids and Communities-Supporting Red Flag Laws and Responsible Access to Firearms. To keep our families safe from mass shootings and reduce gun suicides, lawmakers must pursue policies like Red Flag laws, which allow family and law enforcement to intervene if someone poses a threat to themselves or others, before deadly tragedies involving firearms take place. Lawmakers must also limit easy access to firearms and accessories capable of inflicting mass casualties and encourage safe and responsible storage of all guns. • Addressing America's Uniquely Lethal Domestic Abuse Problem-Disarming Domestic Abusers. More than half of women murdered with guns in America are killed by an intimate partner or family member, and women are five times more likely to be killed in a domestic confrontation when a gun is present. Lawmakers must strengthen laws that help keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers. • Combating Daily Gun Violence-Supporting Research, Law Enforcement and Local Solutions. The government needs to support law enforcement, researchers and local communities in their efforts to combat daily gun violence by funding new research into gun violence; community-driven, evidence-based interventions to curb city gun violence;and new tools to help law enforcement collect evidence, trace all crime guns, reduce trafficking and solve gun crimes. It's time for our government to enact common-sense gun laws supported by the overwhelming majority of Americans. And if our elected officials choose not to act,we will mobilize voters to replace them with leaders who will. Participants were asked to stand up, speak out and Wear Orange to honor Hadiya's life and the lives of all victims and survivors of gun violence. • New York gun violence prevention advocate Erica Ford spearheaded orange as the color of peace through her work with her organization, Life Camp, inc. • The color orange has a long and proud history in the gun violence prevention movement. Whether it's worn by hunters in the woods of Pennsylvania, activists in New York or Hadiya's loved ones in Chicago, orange honors the 100 lives cut short and the hundreds more wounded by gun violence every day. • To honor the more than 100 Americans shot and killed every day and the hundreds more wounded, the Wear Orange campaign invites everyone who agrees we can do more to save American lives from gun violence to do one simple thing: #WearOrange—a color that symbolizes the value of human life—on June 7, 2019, National Gun Violence Awareness Day and to attend local Wear Orange events on June 8th and June 9th. • Last year, #WearOrange trended nationally, with thousands of individuals and organizations answering the call, making their support for the gun violence prevention movement loud and clear. • This June, there will be hundreds of events—from community beautification projects to block parties to Wear Orange walks to youth basketball tournaments on Wear Orange weekend (June 8-June 9th). Thousands of Americans will participate in Wear Orange events nationwide as they stand unified in efforts to end gun violence. • Citizens will stand together with hundreds of Mayors and local governments as they proclaim June 7, 2019 National Gun Violence Awareness Day. • This year's Wear Orange comes after the successful midterm elections that saw gun sense champions elected to all levels of office around the country—from Congress to school boards. And for the first time in 20 years, two major pieces of gun safety legislation passed the U.S. House in February— H.R. 8,the Bipartisan Background Checks Act,which would require background checks on all gun sales, including unlicensed sales online and at gun shows, and H.R. 1112,the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019,which would address the Charleston Loophole. • Wear Orange is a campaign inspired by the actions of students, and we will continue to honor its roots by supporting Students Demand Action volunteers in their efforts to help paint America orange through spoken-word poetry and art, as well as their participation with local Wear Orange events. • As coalition partners, artists, cultural influencers, city officials, mayors, law enforcement, faith leaders, survivors, students, teachers, moms and other advocates in cities all over the country from Brattleboro, Vermont,to Whitewater,Wisconsin, to Birmingham, Alabama,to Laramie,Wyoming,we are coming together around the shared belief that we can create a future free from gun violence. • The sky's the limit. Landmarks across the country will go orange in support of National Gun Violence Awareness Day. • Gun violence ravages too many families and neighborhoods —especially in our cities and disproportionately affects communities of color, as well as other marginalized groups including the LGBTQ community. We are dedicated to working together to make this country safe for all Americans. 1
