WHEREAS, the incidence of melanoma is increasing at an alarming rate with one person dying
from melanoma every hour of every day; and
WHEREAS, in 1960, the chance of getting melanoma was 1/600 and in the year 2000, it is now
1/75; and
WHEREAS, the incidence of melanoma is increasing six percent per year; and
WHEREAS, the risk of getting melanoma is directly related to sun exposure in childhood,
especially severe sunburns in childhood; and
WHEREAS, the City of Seal Beach endeavors to educate the public on the dangers of sun
exposure and to change public behaviors and perceptions about sun exposure.
NOW THEREFORE, I, PAUL YOST, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF SEAL BEACH, do hereby
proclaim May, 2000 as
Melanoma Month
in the City of Seal Beach to educate the public on the dangers of sun exposure in childhood.
IN WITNESS, WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Seal
Beach to be affixed this Twenty-seventh Day of March, Year Two Thousand.
