,TTTIIITI[I WHEREAS, autism is a lifelong neurological disorder that

raffects over 500,000 American citizens or one out
i of every 350 children; and
1r WHEREAS, in California, the Department of Developmental
Services reports a 263 percent increase in autism
over the last ten years; and
_ WHEREAS, patients with this disorder may 6e born with it or
1 • . may develop normally up to between 12 and 24
months and then"slip away" into the autistic
worli and
WHEREAS, the symptoms may include little or no ability to speak, uncontrollable habits of
movement, including self-injurious behavior, hyperactivity, and an insensitivity
to one's environment; and
WHEREAS, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to counteracting the behavioral affects
of autism; and
WHEREAS, great strides in understanding the causes and discovering cures for autism are
being made through intensive behavior intervention, diet and megavitamin
therapies 6y non-profit groups such as the Cure Autism Now Foundation
(CAN), the Autism Research Institute (ARL) and many others; and
WHEREAS, April, 2000 has been declared National Autism Awareness month 6y the
Autism Society of America and a National Autism Awareness rally was held on
April 8, 2000 in Washington, D.C.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Seal Beach
does hereby proclaim April, 2000 as
Autism Awareness Month
in the City of Seal Beach and:urge our residents to become educated about and support those
seeking a cure and working with the victims of this developmentally disabling, every
increasingly common disease.
IN WITNESS, WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of
Seal Beach to be axed this Twenty-fourth Day of April in the Year Two Thousand.
