HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem N TAFF REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council FROM: Nancy L. Beard, Director of Parks, Recreation & Community Services SUBJECT: Contract for the selling of Skate Park advertising SUMMARY OF REQUEST: That Council authorizes the selling of advertising, with a 40% standard commission, to generate funds for the City's Skate Park BACKGROUND: This proposal is very similar to the city's arrangement with Recreation Program contractors who receive a percentage of revenue from the fees their programs generate. In April of 1999, the city opened the first Skate Park located within our city's boundaries. The park was presented as a self-sufficient facility. Both non-resident and resident fees were imposed to sustain the park with staff, equipment and maintenance. In addition to the fees, advertising was to be sold within the park. A few opportunities have come by way of community support for the park but many more exist. The proposal will proactively seek out those who wish to support the park. Advertising will be sold by way of four different sized ads. Each ad will be reviewed by the City Manager prior to its being accepted. There will be no tobacco or alcoholic beverage ads of any kind. The contractor will receive 40% of the ad price, which includes the cost of signage. The city's 60% will go directly back into park's upkeep and to supplement operating cost as needed. A current Recreation Contractor indicated an interest in the advertising sales. A non-exclusion agreement is provided. FISCAL IMPACT: There is no fiscal impact to the current budget. Value to the city could reach $8,000 annually. RECOMMENDATION: Upon motion of the Consent Calendar, Council will approve the advertising agreement and authorize the City Manager to execute same. The 40%fee paid to the contractor includes professionally made signs by Machan Sign Co. in Long Beach. The 60%fee the City receives is pure money that can be used for what it deems necessary for the skate park. The City will pay for mailings, faxing, and copying, all under the approval of the Director. The Director will have final approval of mailings, literature, and any ideas that may come to further promote and make the park successful. 5u-afbnitor Scott Durzo- September 15, 1999 I _ 1
