STAFF REPORT
To: Mayor Yost and Members of the City Council •

From: Michael F. Sellers, Chief of Police
Subject: LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT BLOCK GRANT - 1999
SUMMARY OF REQUEST
It is requested that a Public Hearing be held to consider the acceptance and appropriation of grant funding
of $22,947 under a Local Law Enforcement Block Grant made available by the Bureau of Justice
Assistance.
BACKGROUND
The Bureau of Justice Assistance has announced the availability of funds to units of local government
under the Local Law Enforcement Block Grants (LLEBG)Program, for the purposes of reducing crime
and improving public safety. The City of Seal Beach Police Department is eligible to receive funding
of$22,947 under the conditions of the Grant. The grant period is for two years, from October 1, 1999
to September 30,2001. As with previous LLEBG programs, received by the City in the years 1996, 1997
and 1998, funds received under the terms of this Grant must supplement and not supplant existing
operating funds budgeted for an established designated program.
The Seal Beach Police Department proposes to use this funding as partial payment on the debt service
for the 800 MHz police/fire radio communications system.
FISCAL IMPACT
Matching funds of$2,500 will be.required.
RECOMMENDATION
•
It is recommended that a public hearing be held at the City Council meeting of October 11, 1999 and that
Council approval be given to the acceptance and appropriation of grant funds as detailed above.
