landslides or a volcanic eruption
Risks

Tsunami Facts
•The first wave of a tsunami is usually not the strongest; successive waves
get bigger and stronger
•Once they reach the coast, they can have devastating impacts on the
community. Successive crests can arrive at intervals of every 10 to 45
minutes and wreak destruction for several hours
•The tsunami that occurred on December 6th, 2004 in the Indian Ocean is
known to be the most powerful earthquake that has occurred to date (9.0 on
the Richter scale)
•The Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 struck 14 countries from Thailand to
Africa, killing 250,000+
•80% of tsunamis happen within the "ring of fire"
•U.S. locations with greatest risk of tsunamis are Washington, Oregon,
Hawaii, Alaska, and .... California

• Know the risks at your location
• Plan and practice evacuation routes
• Create a plan with your family
• Stay informed
• If a strong coastal earthquake occurs:
• Drop, cover, and hold
• Gather family and evacuate
• Avoid downed power lines, buildings, and bridges
• Do not return until cleared by emergency personnel
