A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEAL BEACH IN SUPPORT OF ASSEMBLY BILL 639
(KILLEA)
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEAL BEACH HEREBY RESOLVES:
I
WHEREAS, current law establishes the California Coastal
Conservancy to implement a program of agricultural
protection, area restoration and resource enhancement
in the coastal zone and San Francisco Bay and also
provides for the California Department of Boating and
Waterways to study shoreline erosion and to participate
in shoreline erosion control projects; and
I
WHEREAS, Assembly Bill 639 would place the Coastal Resources
Conservation Bond Act of 1988 before the voters to
authorize sale of general obli9ation bonds to raise
$200 million which would be placed in the California
Coastal Conservancy Bond Fund; and
'WHEREAS, $195 million of this money will be available to fund
Conservancy programs and $5 million allocated to
Department of Boatin9 and Waterways for grants to
implement regional shoreline erosion control; and
WHEREAS, as a coastal city, Seal Beach may participate in
funding projects such as facilities needed for tourism
or recreation; protection, restoration or enhancement
of natural resources; increased public access to
coastal resources, beaches and shorefront areas by
applyin9 to the California Coastal Conservancy for
assistance; and
WHEREAS, shoreline erosion in our community has been significant
since the severe winter storms of 1980/81 with
diminished sand supplies and interference in natural
shoreline processs by development.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY the City Council of the City of
Seal Beach to support Assembly Bill 639 and urge local State
Legislature for their support and approval.
