HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Res 3783 1988-05-02 RESOLUTION NUMBER .J1$3 , A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEAL BEACH JOINING ORANGE COUNTY CITIES IN THE "WAR ON DRUGS" THE CITY OF SEAL BEACH DOES HEREBY RESOLVE: WHEREAS, the week of May 8 - 13, 1988 has been designated "National Say No to Drugs Week;" and I WHEREAS, the Orange County Sheriff and police chiefs have identified a severe problem of drug abuse which in Orange County alone resulted in 180 drug-related deaths in 1987; and WHEREAS, there were 29 million doses of cocaine, 2-1/2 million injections of heroin and one million marijuana cigarettes confiscated by the Orange County Regional Narcotics Supression program in 1987 which represented less than fifteen percent of all drug traffic in the county; and WHEREAS, the impact of drug abuse reaches people from all walks of live and age groups and is being recognized as a national epidemic; and WHEREAS, it is also recognized that Orange County citizens working together with law enforcement can win the war on drugs; and WHEREAS, the Orange County Sheriff has called for a change of attitude concerning the use of drugs by society as the major weapon in the "War on Drugs;" and I WHEREAS, it will require all segments of the community to join in the "War on Drugs" and REFUSE TO ABUSE in order to win the war; and WHEREAS, the Orange County Division, League of California Cities created a Task Force of city officials to recommend and work with the Sheriff and city police chiefs to marshall all public and private resources to develop and implement a consistent, countywide effort for a united drug abuse program in Orange County. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Seal Beach to join the "War on Drugs", to join forces with students, parents, and business leaders already engaged in the "War on Drugs and further proclaims the week of May 8-13 1988 as "National Say No to Drugs Week."
