HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Res 3576 1986-03-10 . /:'~ ~.t~ /,,~olrr RESOLUTION NUMBER 351 b A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEAL BEACH, CALIFORNIA, OPPOSING THE TRANSPORTATION BY THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY OF RADIOACTIVE SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL RODS THROUGH THE CITY OF SEAL BEACH THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEAL BEACH HEREBY RESOLVES: I WHEREAS, on Thursday, February 13, 1986, the United States Department of Energy held a public hearing in Long Beach to explain their decision-making process and to provide technical information regarding spent nuclear fuel rods shipping methods and safety; snd WHEREAS, the Department of Energy has stated that as a result of careful consideration of all necessary factors, including available shipping lines, costs and safety, that" the Port of Long Beach was selected as a receiving point for nuclear fuel rod shipments; and WHEREAS, the plan then calls for the fuel rods to be transported north on the Long Beach Freeway, then south on the 405 Freeway, through Seal Beach, on their way to a South Carolina reprocessing plant; snd WHEREAS, the Department of Energy has informed the Port of Long Beach that the shipments will begin in mid-March, 1986. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Seal Beach hereby opposes the transportation of spent radioactive nuclear fuel rods under the direction of the Department of Energy from unknown foreign lands through the Port of Long Beach and then through the City of Seal Beach. I BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the primary consideration is one of safety for the residents of Seal Beach and the surrounding area.
