People watching to learn. Just sitting and watching people as they passed to see how they react to traffic, lights, and people watching them. You learn a lot about social norms when watching people. What happens when social norms are broken? Charissa and others from the troop tested these norms, sitting closely to people in public places, standing closer than usual to friends while they were speaking, ride an elevator facing the back. To get to understand herself better she interviewed her family, had them relate favorite stories and share their photos and memories. She also set some personal goals to accomplish in a one month time. She learned a lot about her ability to accomplish what she sets out to do. TECHNOLOGY: Watching television seems to be easy but watching them and tracking the way that the media represent elderly women and minorities was an eye opening lesson. Charissa found that the media tends to put these groups in the same roles, almost type classing all elderly women and minorities. Charissa found that this was not a true depiction of people. SERVICE: In another effort to understand people and their reactions to breaking the social norm, Charissa took bold steps to wear different clothing around friends and family so get their reactions and try to understand them. She also learned about herself as she started noticing unusual clothing on others. CAREER EXPLORATION: A Psychologist visited out troop to explain some misunderstands about Psychology and counseling. 2. DOLLARS AND SENSE Interest Project Patch SKILL BUILDERS: In researching a country to theme her silver project event after she learned a lot about the pacific islands. It's customs for shopping, purchasing, the money used and the rate of exchange. Since she would he planning the younger girl event she needed to understand budgeting so she worked with her parents. First finding out about the family budget then becoming aware of costs of everyday things like meals, entertainment, clothing and gasoline. TECHNOLOGY: Budgeting and traveling go hand in hand and Charissa needed to find out about how emergency money could be obtained should she be in need and what is the best way to carry money for travel expenses. Charissa will be traveling this summer so this information and her new found knowledge will be tested. although she is not old enough yet, understanding the use of a credit card and interest rates and forms of payment were a new lesson she was willing in learn about now so later she could make a sound decision should she apply for credit. SERVICE: Charissa held the office of treasurer for her Girl Scout troop this year. Tracking dues and approving expenses based on available funds and budgeting set by the troop and it's adult members. CAREER EXPLORATION: In learning more about expenses, budgeting and credit she spoke with 2 female business owners to understand the process and what they enjoyed about being the owner of a business. 3. TRAVEL interest project patch A personal car is one way to get around but Charissa experienced a bus, train and bike to expose herself to new methods in get around. Charissa would love m spend her whole life traveling so she has contacted several countries and exciting cities visitor bureaus to get information about what is there to see should she visit. Packing and not forgetting anything is something she learned early as a Girl Scout as she went on camping trips. Packing for a trip without your parents, for several nights and several weeks are all different lists. When she was packing for her trip to Australia and Fiji last year she learned and used a pre - packing list of things to do and a packing list of things she needed in take. Preparation for travel needs to be organized! TECHNOLOGY: Not only do you need to be comfortable using different modes of transportation you need to know how to get there. Learning to read bus schedules, city maps, bus guides and road maps me another new skill for Charissa. SERVICE: Helping someone else enjoy their trip is what she helped someone do. CAREER EXPLORATION: while traveling last summer Charissa spoke with the bus drivers, hotel employees, tour guides about their training and schooling to see if their requirements might be vastly different from the United States. 4. LEADERSHIP Pin: Serving as a troop officer, assisting with the care of younger children in a after school program and then leading the Cadette troop for one month prepared her to discuss with others the important skills needed to lead a group. The group also identified traits that may make it difficult for you to get a group to listen to you (leadership skill builder #3). In shadowing a doctor and watching her interact with peers and associates impressed Charissa with her use of leadership and confidence in her ability. 5. DREAMS TO REALITY Listening and interviewing so many different careers has opened her eyes in all the possibilities. Learning that there are some careers where women are not a majority was surprising. Seeing how professional mothers balance their career and family reinforced that it can be done. Reading the want ads and lemming the schooling and experience necessary showed that goals need to be set early. Shadowing a paleontologist has only opened her eyes and helped Charissa set her goals firmly in this field. 6. CADETTECHALLENGE knowing herself - by caring about her appearance (fitness to fashion IP). Relating m others- leaming about herself and her thinking by playing word association and then learning about how twins think and act and non twins think and act in the same situations. Values of living - Girl Scouts Owns are a tradition and she has been part of the planning and carrying out of this ceremony on several occasions. Contributing to the community - by assisting with children's arts and crafts at a local after school program. Knowing Girl Scouting — reading about our founder Juliette Low. 7. SILVER PROJECT Giving something back m Girl Scouts and to the younger girls in the Seal Beach Girl Scout community she planned a "two" themed play day event for the girls. Giving them some cultural information, crafts to help them dress as a native of the pacific islands and then a remembrance of the day with photos. Charissa learned about the importance of budgets, research of cultural events and celebrations and how to relate to the age group that would be enjoying her event. Charissa also put her leadership skills together as she recruited assistance for the days activities in `training" them to work with the younger girls and to deliver the activity in a fun and educational way. Scheduling, shopping, preparation, fund raising, delegating and leadership are now skills Charissa is confident to put on her resume for life.
