A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SEAL BEACH URGING THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE
OF CALIFORNIA TO INITIATE A COMPREHENSIVE

THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEAL BEACH DOES HEREBY RESOLVE:
WHEREAS,
WHEREAS,
WHEREAS,
WHEREAS,
WHEREAS,
WHEREAS,
the beaches and coastal resources of the State of California
are a vital part of the total environment and economy of the
state,as a whoJe;,~nd
. . '. \
in ~cent yea~, :th~ increaSing destruction of coastal
resources by severe storms and high tides, together with
'predictions that such events are likely to recur annually
over the next twenty to thirty years, confirms the urgent
need for.Statewiae action to preserve and protect our
beaches 'and related coastal resources, both public and
private; and
it appears that any long-term, permanent solution will have
to be accomplished through a regional study followed by
a management program involving the Federal, State and
local governments, as well as private property owners;
and
I
the San Diego County Association of Governments has initiated
a study to develop ways and means of dealing with beach
erosion in San Diego County on a long-term, permanent basis;
and
the Seal Beach City Council feels that a similar program
can and should be developed for the entire State involving
the efforts and resources of all affected parties; and
under the mandate of Proposition 20, approved by the voters
in 1972, protection of the coast was determined a matter
of Statewide concern, and the California Coastal Commission
should be directed to make greater efforts to preserve
coastal resources from further destruction by massive'
storm damage.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Seal Beach does hereby urge the Governor of the State of California to
initiate, coordinate and provide leadership toward developing a long-
term, permanent, comprehensive Statewide program to preserve and protect
the beaches, harbors and other coastal resources of the State for the
future benefit and enjoyment of the State's residents as well as the
tourist trade,
I
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be sent to the
