Re: STR permit for 521 Riviera Drive
Thank you for putting this matter of concern on the agenda for May 27th. My husband and I have been
homeowners at 531 Riviera Drive for about 50 years. Recently it has come to our attention that a STR
permit from the City of Seal Beach was given to our neighbor at 521 Riviera Drive. This residence is
directly across the street from the field and playground at McGaugh School, The proximity to children
coming and going before school, playing during school hours and for sports events after school and on
the weekends could be putting our children at risk. There are not thorough background checks done on
those who stay in a STR and their rental can be for several weeks at a time.
The other added risk of having a STR on this block is the increase in traffic and parking. The Seal Beach
Police Department considers traffic enough of a risk that they have two crossing guards at each end of
Riviera Drive during school hours. Out of the four streets that border McGaugh, there is parking only
allowed on our block (Marlin, from Riviera to Seal Beach Blvd does have parking on the residence side,
but there are no access gates open to the school). While there might be a suggested number of cars
allowed to park at the STR for each night rental, compliance would be difficult to enforce.
We urge you to not reissue the STR permit for 521 Riviera Drive because of our safety concerns for our
single family zoned neighborhood.
